Greenville, SC
This is a very nice town near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town's historic area is clean, well-maintained and interesting. One of my favorite areas was a park developed around a series of waterfalls where textile mills once stood. A novel suspension bridge above the Reedy River allows pedestrians to cross the gorge and view the falls and beautiful plantings.
The town was the home of Shoeless Joe Jackson, a member of the 1919 White Sox, whose team members were accused of throwing the World Series. Despite being acquitted in a trial, the eight players were banned from baseball for life. In that series, Jackson played errorless ball in the field and batted .375, with a series record 12 hits.
