My experience with a Desert Tortoise on I-15

Caught this guy trying to cross the freeway between Mesquite and Vegas last thursday. I stopped, picked him up, and relocated him off a dirt road several miles safely away from the freeway. I know they're a threatened species, but I can see why people like them as pets. I feel very grateful to see one of these rare animals in the wild. Hopefully he stays out of traffic.

Hey, that's pretty cool. I've heard you can see those on certain trails in St George.

By the way, when I read the title, I was thinking I'd have to throw this topic in the Rubbish Bin.

That's it! For saving that tortoise's life, I'm going to report you for harassing protected wildlife.

    Expect some cops, man.

    Nice work.

poor tortoise is thinking "hope she doesn't wait up for me"
But if I agreed with you, we would both be wrong.

We used to have this problem in Southern California. It was bad. If there was one in the training area we had to stop and wait for it to leave. We also had to have yearly classes on these. If it is crossing the road, your supposed to move it across the road and not back. Otherwise they will walk right back across the road. We were always told that if you picked them up above your knees, they would piss themselves causing dehydration and they die.

According to this article, 150 ft in the direction it was headed would have been adequate. It was great you took some action.

Thanks for all the posts. As far as dehydration I did not notice if the tortoise emptied its bladder. However the temperature was not hostile at all and the spring like conditions of the area offered an array of green and wet vegitation, so I am completely confident the tortoise is fine. But I appreciate the info.

As far as pets go they are awesome. We had one when I was a kid. I came home from school and found him in our yard. Must have escaped from someone else who brought it home. It would run and play with us. Cuddle up in our lap at night. Wait, it did none of that. It sat there like a rock until the day my grandma killed it by putting it in a water troft that it couldn't escape from and drowned.
I wish my lawn was EMO so it would cut itself.
