Explore narrow slot canyons with moss covered walls, peaceful pools, dripping grottos, beautiful cascades, sheer cliffs, and thundering waterfalls. Arizona's diverse geology results in a broad array of technical canyons which offer some of the most beautiful and remote backcountry to be found within the state. Welcome to technical canyoneering - the sport of descending canyons, streams, ravines, rivers, and gorges while traveling on foot by hiking, wading, swimming, rappelling, and climbing.

Arizona: Technical Canyoneering is the first guidebook dedicated to Arizona's technical canyons. In this presentation author Todd Martin will provide an introduction the sport including equipment information, resources, safety tips and a photo slideshow of the state's gorges. Safe descent of technical canyons requires the use of rope and techniques such as rappelling, ascending, anchor building, and, in some instances, more advanced techniques such as pothole escape to descend. Due to the added complexity involved with rope work, canyoneering is not intended for the casual hiker.
