Thread: Ruins

I'll be in Buckhorn wash/draw in the Swell next weekend. Any hints to any cool stuff in the area besides the big panel? PM me if you feel like sharing. I understand if you don't.

Not much for ruins inside, just this bit of wall and the last two photos...

still, plenty of things to keep an eye out for.

    Metates, I believe.

Pretty common in a lot of sites.

That was my first thought but, frankly I have never seen a string of them. I guess I always assumed metates were free standing bowls or smaller flat rock slabs detached from the cliff. This is interesting. Thanks!

You obviously need to visit more ruins, they are common at just about every site that was lived in for any length of time.

A place to see them on an epic scale is Bowns Canyon off Lake Powell...upstream from the Escalante arm. The canyon is filled with ruins and there's no doubt they were growing corn in that thing big time. Probably the most concentrated corn grinding depressions and matates I've ever seen anywhere...dozens of them, big ones, too. This pic is near a granary I found recently.

I absolutely agree with this statement! I spend too much time in my office. When I am outside, it is usually hiking the local canyons/mountains or canyoneering. When the knees go for good, I'll start hitting more flat land stuff.

BTW, I'm heading to Buckhorn wash area this weekend. I haven't heard from anyone about places to visit. Anyone?
