I just spent a month touring/camping/hiking all around souther Arizona. Did a lot of reading about the history of the place and visited just about every monument and historical place there is down there. For example, I learned a lot more about the expedition of Coronado...that was pretty much like Columbus sailing to the west...they had no friggin' idea what they were going to find. They were actually looking for civilizations similar to what they found and plundered down in Mexico...they got nothing but disappointment. There were more than a thousand people on that expedition...soldiers, slaves, cattle, horses, craftsmen. I had no idea, I always thought it was just himself and maybe a few dozen soldiers.

Anyway, I also learned a lot about the native Indians that lived down there at the same time as the Anasazi further up north and for the most part, they suffered the same fate. They were living more or less out in the open until about the year 1200, then they started building structures in cliffs and defensive positions. So it looks like there was some ass kicking going on and it was pretty widespread.
