    twin knolls canyon

here's an ok canyon in the swell for anyone interested, and who wonders "hey... what's in there ?"

this drains into iron wash, and i think would best be completed as a loop - down twin knolls and up iron. do not do what i did, both in a day. plus a wrong turn to lengthen the hike by ~7 miles to turn a 7am start into a 3am finish w/ no pack. *ugh*.

start at the lone man/5 moh/twin knolls/iron divide single track th (labeled twin knolls on the ng/ti swell map). autos are allowed right up to the twin knolls/lone man fork, but excellent camping is back .5 mile or less on teh rim of an iron wash spur. but from this fork head due east down into a broad, shallow valley that soon deepens (or rather the sides come in closer to you). enjoy all the way to iron wash. a few dc's. a few swims/wades. leave the ropes behind unless needed as hand lines or lowering packs. time from camp to iron wash was ~5 hours. then back up iron wash and camp above.

it has been a while, but i did not need a rope to descend the canyon. comfort zones vary, but no drops were more than 10' or so if i remember correctly, so if ropes feel safer just a short one would be needed. can't remember anchor material or placement situation.
