Echo Park is a beautiful place to camp, and the hikes around there are great. We saw bighorns when we were there. However, this section of DNM is in Colorado, quite a distance from the fossil quarry which is near Vernal. If you want to see the fossils, Green River Campground sounds like a good spot, although I haven't camped there. I seem to recall nice cottonwoods to provide some shade.

I'm not sure if the fossil museum is currently open, but it is really good and educational. Also, there is a ranger-led hike to the actual fossil quarry. Kids should love it.

There are also some state parks in the area.

we camped at the split mtn cg, i think... it is along the green near the quarry. very nice place, good views.

jr. was little then so i backpacked him down to the green from a nw side th from some fish hatchery. nice pictographs along the way and a pretty hike w/ some flowing water. also went to some old homestead, i want to say near hog canyon (?). plenty of rock art stops along the way.

jr. loved thte quarry, it is small but very cool.

I heard that the quarry is closed, due to structural problems...

Might want to call ahead and find out.

Sounds like "Josie's Cabin". A woman lived there all her life in a tiny cabin. she kept livestock inside two box canyons nearby. You can hike both canyons. Neat place.
