Trail work to be done on Zion's West Rim Trail
The National Park Service plans to remove broken concrete from the West Rim
Trail north of Scout Lookout starting July 17. The project is expected to take
about five days to complete. Hikers on the West Rim Trail should anticipate 15-
to 20-minute delays while the concrete rubble is being loaded for removal by
helicopter. If the helicopter is called to a fire, the project will be
rescheduled.
The work will not
interfere with visitors hiking to Scout Lookout or Angels Landing. A second
project to resurface sections of the trail to Scout Lookout with new concrete
will be scheduled later in the year.
The West Rim Trail was originally constructed in 1925 and the section of trail
above Scout Lookout was paved in 1929. The paving was done to accommodate stock
use on the trail.
Over the years, the pavement has been repaired as needed, but the concrete has
now deteriorated to the point that it must be removed. The concrete will not be
replaced on this section of the trail.
