Second annual Wildflower Festival blooms at Cedar Breaks

Cedar Breaks National Monument will host its second annual Wildflower Festival from June 30 to July 22.
"During this spectacular display, visitors to the Monument will be able to see paintbrush and primrose, lupine and larkspur, and a spectrum of other flowers in meadows, woods, and marshes," park superintendent Paul Roelandt said.
"We have put together a series of special events and will have park rangers, volunteers, and other resources available for visitors to learn about and photograph the incredibly beautiful variety of wildflowers to be discovered at Cedar Breaks."
Wildflower specialists and volunteers will be available every day during the festival, beginning at 10 a.m. Festival highlights include guided walks, interpretive field trips, photography workshops, junior ranger scavenger hunts and Zion Canyon Field Institute Classes.
Guided hikes, which start at the visitor center, will be offered twice a day, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
On July 12 and 19 the park will offer photography workshops.
Those interested in identifying plant species and learning more about plant communities can join park volunteer and retired professor Doug Reynolds for a special field trip through the park entitled: "Plant Communities of Cedar Breaks." The park will also host several Zion Canyon Field Institute (ZCFI) classes.

    Telescoping at Stansbury

A group will observe the night sky with telescopes on Saturday, starting at dusk, at the Stansbury Park Observatory Complex. A 30-45 minute program will start at 9:45 p.m., where Salt Lake Astronomical Society member Bill Kennedy will present the second part of a two-part basic introduction to the telescope. The presentation will focus on basic types of telescope mounts and how they can track the stars, including examples of each type. Kennedy will also discuss devices used to point the telescope to objects in the sky.

    REI adult climbing

There is an adults-only (16 & up) climbing night at the Salt Lake City REI store today from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will feature a special slide show presentation by climbing legend Jeff Lowe, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The climbing wall will open at 6:30 p.m.
This is a perfect opportunity for beginners, as well as experienced climbers, to climb one-of-a-kind wall on routes, which range from 5.5 to 5.13 in difficulty.
Participants will receive discounts and giveaways and will also get a first look at Ogden's ice climbing park, which opens soon.
