The best part is the lower end, so it's almost better to visit the canyon from 40 Mile Ridge. The lower end is really pretty with water, waterfalls, pools, and some cool arches, and is fairly narrow. The upper end is wide and hot, but still pretty, but nothing like the lower end.
Utah is a very special and unique place. There is no where else like it on earth. Please take care of it and keep the remaining wild areas in pristine condition. The world will be a better place if you do.

did you park at moody trailhead and go to the lake?

if so how long of a trip?

is fourty mile the long gradual ridge to the east?

    see any wildlife?

    any technical?

    Just my 02 cent worth-

Forty mile Ridge Th is off Hole in the Rock road, very short hike to top of Crack in the Wall, may want to lower big packs on a cord, then down sand slide. You can take high or low road if Lake is low to get to Stevens. Not really any technical I can recall.
The distance to get to Steven's this way is relatively shorter than going down Moody canyon then down the Escalante.
You can rest when you're dead

o.k. did a little searching, this does sound like an easier route.

sounds like a 2 dayer anyway

    thx for the input.

still a little interested in coming in from moodies, maybe a nice fall loop back to forty mile.
