Beus Canyon - Couple Quick Photos

Hey folks! Did a short hike up Beus Canyon yesterday, thought I'd share a few photos. First time up Beus, just wanted to get a taste for it -- also didn't get started 'til nearly 2 o'clock -- so didn't have long to hike (only ended up being about 2 hours roundtrip... 'bout a fourth of the way/1000 vertical feet up the trail).

Anyway, was a beautiful day, little warm but not too terribly bad. Lots of folks out on the trail -- 46th Street trailhead was packed, and that was just folks that started out from that side of the mountain (ran into a group of 6 college kids that had started out from Snowbasin and hiked over the top... made me feel like an old man just thinkin' about it!). One family I ran into said they had seen a rattlesnake about a mile or so up, so that made me a bit nervous (never had a snake encounter of any kind on a trail yet, and I get startled easily... ).

Anywhoo... I'll shut up & make with the photos...

Good job avoiding the snake. I'm surprised he would be so high on the mountain. Glad you had a good hike.

Is that a rattler? It looks just like the one I have seen last weekend

Nah, it was a Gophersnake: didn't have a triangular-shaped head or a rattle, and I was less than a foot away and he never coiled.

P.S. -- You sure that's a rattler that you've got photoed there? It doesn't look like one, at least not one common to Utah. Where did you photograph it? Up north here along the Wasatch, the only rattler you're likely to run into is the Great Basin Rattlesnake, and that is definitely not one of those.
