Thanks. I just spent 30 minutes listening to these songs....Glad to see Johnny Cash was there, and George Jones.
Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, as vital to our lives and water and good bread

Some of those Id never heard of but the Morrisey stuff is understandable, I actually have alot of the Smiths'/Morrisey stuff...and Johnny Cash' stuff. I thought they could have put down Queens' "Who Wants to Live Forever".

sad songs
Rascall Flatts sings a song titled "Ellworth" that get to me every time. About an old woman with Ahlzhiemers who can't remember today but remembers everything about her life with her husband in Ellworth Kansas 1948.

The Cash version of Hurt is epic in its own right but paired with the video it is much greater than the sum of its parts. Cash all but rewrote Hurt with the mightiest of conviction and not so subtle undertones of regret. The video nearly brings me to tears each time I watch it.
here is a youtube link to the video, embedding is dissabled on this one.

There's a great 2004 Fresh Air interview with Rick Rubin where he talks about producing the American Recording albums.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...toryId=5027608
According to Rubin Johnny Cash didn't to record Hurt, but Rubin talked him into it. Cash also thought it was a song about drugs - specifically an anti-drug song.
I had never heard the song Hurt until Cash covered it, so when I finally heard the NIN version I thought it was pretty comical. It's like Reznor didn't even understand his own song.

I knew the NIN version originally, but when I heard Johnny Cash sing it, I was blown away. One of the most haunting songs EVER. I'd never seen the video until now, though. Thanks for that!

05-10-2007, 11:48 AM #14My 7 year old bounces his requests between A Boy Named Sue and Hurt depending if I've got American Idiot in my CD stack. I don't know if its good or bad that his favorite songs are Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Hurt, and a Boy Named Sue. I don't play Son Volt or anything related to Jay Farrar when he's in the car. He'd be in rehab by 12.
