I hiked it in October 2002 doing half of the trail on separate day trips. Hiking the Escalante by Rudi Lambrechtse was my trail guide. I departed from near the airfield and followed cairns to Mamie Creek and the natural bridge and then returned. The next day I drove to Escalante and started from the southern trailhead, hiked to Mamie Creek and then returned. Most of the route is on slickrock. You'll encounter some sections of treadway, but for the most part you'll navigate from cairn to cairn.

With a car spot or some hitchhiking, a one way north to south traverse would be the better way to go. Plenty of water and campsites at Mamie Creek and Death Hollow although I believe you may need to secure a permit in order to camp.

The hike is strenuous, lots of up and downs, but the scenery is spectacular.

Thanks for the info - we'll have two cars so we'll setup a shuttle. I'll check out that book if I can find it.
