Thread: Night Riding in St George?

    Night Riding in St George?

I was thinking... I've never gone on a night ride. I might like to try it out this weekend down south.

Maybe a quick one like the Green Valley Loop? The daytime temps will be high 60's, so night won't be too bad.

Is a regular headlamp good enough to bike with?

not really, but you could do it. Basically, the more expensive light you have, the better night riding will be. I don't particularly enjoy night riding, but if you've never done it, try it out for sure. Maybe you'll like it?
gears and suspension are for old men and girls.

One night last summer riding down the North Skyline Trail, I had my led headlamp to use in case I was out there too long, the bad thing was that even though that trail has some serious erosion down the center of it resulting in one big gully 12-18" deep and about that wide, there was no depth perception to tell how the trail was shaped, it just looked totally flat. I wondered if that was a result of the type of light the LED's generated, or if it's just from the direction of the light being so close to my eyes that no depth could be perceived. I don't use anything but LED's - mainly for backpacking and hiking since it's light and the battery life is great, so I'm wondering if it's different for different kinds of light or if it's where the light is placed that makes the most difference in being able to read a trail well.

Back when I lived in Moab, I wanted to do a full moon ride on the slickrock trail since we'd done it so much we basically knew every foot of it, and after a couple minutes you could see everything out there with a full moon, but it never happened.

I don't think Green Valley would be that bad with most any light since the trail is so hard packed and wide, and white in so many places. I went out last summer and did a Stucki loop at night. What I found hard was there are so many trails out there that without seeing all the landmarks you easily end up on other trails going in other directions. But that is what is so cool about Bearclaw is that all the trails go in the same direction..down.
