A familiar figure at Park City Mountain Resort was killed in a skiing accident Wednesday.
Brett Pendleton, 49, of Draper, died of injuries suffered when he apparently hit a tree along PayDay run, said resort spokeswoman Krista Parry.
"We're just stunned up here," she said, noting that Pendleton was an expert skier who served as a volunteer safety patroller at PCMR on Tuesdays and was a long-time member of the resort's Masters race training program. He also was a renowned hang glider and paraskier.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Pendleton family at this time," said Peter Curtis, the resort's president and general manager. "We have lost an important member of the Park City Mountain Resort team." Parry said there are no reports of anyone witnessing the crash.
Pendleton had been skiing earlier in the day with his wife, and they made arrangements to meet at their car around 3 p.m. After he failed to show up, she called the resort safety patrol about 4:40 p.m.
Patrollers found Pendleton within seven minutes of the call and tried to stabilize him at the scene. He was then taken to the base and from there by ambulance to University Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he was pronounced dead.
To honor Pendleton, Park City Mountain Resort has scheduled a memorial run this weekend as part of the Loritz Cup races. Parry asked people interested in participating to meet at noon today near the finish arena on PayDay run.

My brother in law was just telling me about this tonight. Brett was his neighbor. I guess he lived in Draper on the hill so he could take off and land his hang glider in his backyard. This guy was a real outdoorsman. Have a look at his obituary, he was also a skydiver and had over 7,500 jumps!
