    Capitol Reef trip

    Hey all,

I'm planning a couple days down in Capitol Reef in February, and was wondering if you guys had any suggestion for good dry day hikes.

Hickman Bridge is the most popular hike in the park, and for good reason.

Sulphur Creek is primo, just buy some Neoprene socks and you are geared up for a Feb hike.

The Frying Pan Trail is nice.

    Chimney Rock Trail is good

And the hike to where the tech section of Pandora's Box begins is also really nice. Tons of petrofied wood along the route.

    Grand Wash is OK.

I was not impressed with Capitol Wash *yawn*

I like either Upper or Lower Muley Twist, the one with Saddle Arch and several unnamed arches. Up on top you can see Waterpocket fold and Henry's, nice views.
Hall's Creek Narrows is nice too, but might be more fun as overnighter. Lot o' wading there.
Some slots I think not in the park--Burro is kinda neat.

I can't go back there unless incognito. I am probably still on some rangers' wanted poster there.

My very favorite photo op is Cathedral Valley, a little hiking there, mostly driving tour.

Nothing too exciting. I'm sort of spontaneous and that always doesn't jive with a permit system, even a free one. I had planned a BP into the Dirty Devil River area, but the weather was looking bad. It looked like I had a 24-36 hour window to hike to I was down south and decided to overnight at Hall Creek Narrows and explore. Of course supposed to get a free permit at Capitol Reef visitor center, I noted at the register. I wasn't about to drive all the way back there and loose half a day screwing around with that. So I left a detailed entry at to why, I would be responsible for getting myself out and obey all rules ( yeah right already one broken).
Did my trip, hoped the TH wouldn't be checked. Of course came back to a note on my Jeep signed by Ranger_____. I promptly tore it up and headed onto my next destination, not in Capitol Reef park.

And I've been to the Wave in Coyote Buttes at least 4 times and never gotton a permit. I've cross countried all over the Buttes and can get there without using a TH. I went there the first time when no permit system was in place many years ago. Old habits die hard I guess.

What are some kid friendly hikes there? Want to head down with the family and I am looking for some fun hiking. My kids are 3 and 1 but i can pack like a mule. Thanks

Not to be a buzz-killer but it is too bad that you can't go in the summer or fall instead. My favorite part of Capital Reef is the orchards. I think it is a lot of fun to pick your own fruit there.
