Libre Map Project - 24k scale USGS DRG's
This is a pretty cool thing. This guy took donations to purchase the whole collection of these and put them up for free usage and download.

That is cool.
If all you want is a big map in a file its great.
I much prefer Nat Geo TOPO because I can markup, make trails, download to a GPS etc. I have Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, California, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana on my laptop. It all appears as one giant seamless topo to me.
For Utah stuff take a look here: http://agrc.utah.gov/agrc_sgid/sgidintro.html
Tons of great stuff, including the free topo quads.
There are bunches of freeware tools that ake advantage of the free quads but I find all of them to be huge PIA. I have more money than time to spend on mapping software so I prefer to let National Geo do the work. Please buy my book - "Paiute ATV Trail Guide" at www.atvutah.com - I need gas money!!!!
