    Cascade Mt. east of Orem

Anyone interested in hiking Cascade Mt. on July 5 or July 6? I plan to start from the dirt road above Rock Canyon Campground and hike up the canyon (don't know the name?) above Rock Canyon to the ridge and then follow the ridge north to the summit.

Possibly. It is plant shutdown, so I am forced to take time off (darn!)

If I can get a baby sitter, and nothing else comes up, I would like to go.

Just have to see when it gets closer.

Sorry, I'm going to be all wore out from a 4 day zion trip on those days, but
Josh and I are thinking about doing both Cascade and Provo Peak (actually the whole ridge line) in one long day sometime later in the summer. I haven't really looked at a map, and am not familiar with trails in the area, but should be an adventure. Anyone got any reccomendations/mileage for this one? I was thinking of starting some where around Rock Canyon cmpground and then leaving a car at Big Springs for pick up if there is a good route off the backside of cascade.

I'd like to go. Keep me posted on the plans and if I can get work off, I'll be there.

    Gentleman,
    Utah County hikers/trekkers

    Cascade Peak.
Have done the route 3 times, but
back in the early 90's. Always from
the east side...trail part of the way,
then off trail and then a serious scramble
to the near top, then a walk to the top
and then on the descent using
a rope in one spot. it's a killer view
atop the N ridge of Cascade. It, Box
Elder and Spanish Fork Peak (Mapleton
Mt.) are best ridge views in the County.

Most memorable passage, Paul Huff, her
then male partner and my ex-wife. Paula and Tom
Wharton of the SL Tribine authored a book
on Utah's highest peaks/in each county.
Was later copied by two other writers.
    Paula was a strong hiker.
But after the trip and after the publication of
the book she reported - the toughest mountain
hike in Utah I've ever done was the one "x" took
us on, to the top of Cascade Peak.

(Paula is now married, has a two year old son,
has an additional degree in nutrition and lives
in Virginia with her marine recruiter hub)

    Squaw Peak Road
    East of RC Campground.
Travel south on the road, past the campground
turn off, and there is a slight marker? and
a trail and route that heads east up the hill
and gets one to a pass between the Cascade
Ridge to the North and Shingle Mill Peak to
    the SE.

To Cascade - it is a long way to the highest
north point from the pass. function of how much
time and energy the hiker/group has.

From Shingle Mill East to Provo Peak?
Travel the route IF, you have the wings
of an angel, otherwise zillions of phony
handholds on loose limestone. It's one thing
to view it from the valley, quite another to
approach it from the shingle mill or PP side.
I've not heard of anyone doing the route,
    and surviving.

Utah County Peaks, aside from Main route up Timp,
and/or Nebo - it's a land of near total solitude.

If you do the trek/passage to Cascade, enjoy
and cherish the views - panoramic and memorable.

    More on Cascade

I posted a a reply to the previous
post and then - it vanished,
    never appeared?

Pray tell, a sign I suppose that the
    moderator/or someone else is king?

    Excuse the miscue...
use of the word Paul when
I meant Paula. But Paula was
used in the following lines and so
the context could NOT have been lost.

    I know Paula, Tom well....
and years ago speaking with an Outside Magazine
editor - advised that use of Kelsey's books was
like "Dancing with the Devil." Well the moniker stuck
and they/she used that for the article title.

So when I see Paula next time, and/or Tom this weekend,
I'll tell both that their hiking book reportedly "sucks."
Book was based on weekly articles that appeared in
the outdoor section of the SL Tribune - newsprint
featured many color photos and detailed maps.

Granted Kelsey's, others hiking guides & maps, do
a better job of "guiding" the traveler than others.
But in my view, there is still some worth in the spoken
    word of a mt. traveler.

And in time, most seasoned travelers, move beyond the
guidebooks and embrace naturalist, flower, bird books.
It begs the question, what's the currency of connection to
    mountains or even the desert?

I travel to Utah County frequently. With quiet
joy I glance at east facing ridgelines, and often Cascade,
and realize how lucky I've been to "insignificantly" stand
    atop and embrace.

Those planning a trip to Cascade.
Use whatever guidebooks, or turn to intuition and instinct.
Take binoculars and note mt. goat or soaring golden eagle.
And enjoy fields of wondrous wild flowers.

And to you pundits - save your thankless punches please!
Desert or mountain travelers that write text - who meet
your expectations or not - deserve some slack.

I'm still trying to arrange my work schedule. There is still a chance I'll be there, but I'm still not 100% sure.
