Thread: Fun with Junk Mail

    Fun with Junk Mail

Do you get lots of junk mail? I do. Hate it? I used to. Credit Card apps, Home Mortgages, Loans,

I'll show you why I now LOVE to receive junk mail. This fun activity will only work with junk mail that include the prepaid envelope inside of them. This means the original sender is paying the postage!!

Do not throw the contents away!! We'll send them back! Only, not to the original source. What you do, is "trade" junk mail. In this tutorial below, I have mail from Bank of America and Citi. These pictures will show me switching the contents, and putting them in the other's prepaid envelope.

Try not to mail anything back that has your name or address on it. If you only get one piece of junk mail per day, don't worry. You can either wait for another to come (which won't be very long), or you can send some of YOUR junk back, like yesterday's shopping list. Or a picture of you naked -- oops, did I say that? I sure hope the moderator edits that out!

That's great. I usually like to send them valuable Arby's coupons or some partially used napkins.
Like jewels in a crown, the precious stones glittered in the queen's round metal hat.

Hahaha..... I do something similar when I get SPAM attempting to spoof a legitamate website. You know the type..... Your PayPal account is about to be cancelled unless you log in and verify your email, username and password.... I fill them out with a phoney email, username and password. Figure they will waste time trying to make it work. Also, if everyone did this the spoofs would be so overwhelmed they would stop.

One of the best things I have done lately is to opt out of those prescreened credit card offers. I used to get up to 10 offers every week and I was sick of shreding them.

Go to this website to add yourself to the "do not call list" of credit card solicitations.

    www.optoutprescreen.com

After I signed up for it, I have only received CC applications from my alma mater - U of U.

In the past, I've just torn the things up into confetti--except for the prepaid envelope, then stuffed everything back in (including the original envelope it came in), along with a note: Stop sending me this financial porn. They haven't stopped, but it's been fun. Now I just write refused on the envelope, and take it into the post office with me and throw it in the "return" tub. Of course, that's easy for me to do since I work there. No matter, they have to pay the return postage as well.

Can you just write refused and return it from your home mailbox? I like the idea that they pay freight again. They pay to send it out, pay for the prepaid envelope, and then pay a THIRD time if it's refused? That's great.

Unfortunately, your SSN is directly correlated with your credit report. I too was worried about identity theft, but nothing resulted from submitting it.

I heard that the number of CC offers effects your credit score. Anyone know if this is true?

Not the number of offers... but the number of credit cards does......

If you have unused credit cards or credit accounts its best to close them out. Anther good reason to close out obsolete accounts is that it provides less opportunity for identity thief.

I have been told that if you keep unused credit card accounts open, each month that goes by with you having no balance on the card it increases your credit rating slightly.

I used to get e-mails from the sons/daughters of dead diplomats in Africa and the Middle East (at least that is who they said they were). Before being murdered, their fathers had hidden away millions of dollars in some obscure bank accounts. I was asked to have that money deposited into my personal savings account and then I would be given 10% of the money. All I had to do was give them my account number so they could make the deposit.

I also won a lottery in Spain one time. To receive the money, all I had to do was give them my account number so they could make the deposit.

I feel bad for the people who believe these scams. I am sure that there are some "believers" out there.

There are indeed believers out there. I had clients I was working with (I "do" real estate) when I was still fairly new in the business, and we were looking around the range of $350K for their new home. They told me they were cash buyers. Great....no worries about loan denial, etc. So, we find a home, write an offer and we are required to provide a document that shows proof of funds, which is standard for a cash offer. They proceed to tell me that they are still waiting for their funds, but will have them any day. A wire from Africa is being sent to them from a diplomat's son who they helped get back his deceased father's fortune by sending him $5,000.

OK....lesson learned by me as well. Now when someone tells me they are a cash buyer, they have to show proof of funds to me before we head out looking!

Ahh yes, the Nigerian scams. That's a subject all on it's own. In fact, I've got some great material I need to dig up on that. Give me a minute.

what cracks me up is that they actually WORK - tha scam I mean - obviously, since Cleetus down in the holler'd just knows it's his big ticket to fame...since Walmart wouldn't hire him or his wife to work
