Free MP3's
How about I give you guys a little education in how to "find" and download stuff on the web for free??? This bypasses all file sharing software hassles and is super simple.... You will have to let your conscience be your guide in what is ethical to download.
Enter this string into Google
-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" "Last modified" mp3
This should allow you to download millions of mp3 songs. You can always change the 'mp3' to 'avi' or 'wmv' 'mpeg' etc etc
Even Better is if you want to find something specific.
you can enter in a search after the 'last modified' text - enter in like an album name or the artist name and see what it comes up with.
For Example
-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" mp3 "Beatles"
Will search for any mp3 with Beatles in the title. This is the method I use most often..... I mean, if I was actually downloading copyrighted material.
This method of searching and downloading takes advantage of someone who does not know how to correctly set their server permissions. Using this I have also stumbled across some pretty "interesting" amateur videos.

Have you actually downloaded free music this way before? I did as you suggested, and all I got was a redirect to several different paysites -- like $1 for a complete album, or $1 a month, or other such deals -- which isn't a bad deal, but it aint free either.
It's only "science" if it supports the narrative.

I get EVERYTHING this way....
Just cut and paste
-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" mp3 "Beatles"
into google and press search, it will show every open system on the web that contains an MP3 with beatles in the title.
I just did this and the first one up allowed access to probably 200 beatles songs..... occationally you will get a pay-per-view site. Just play with it a little, if you are not finding access to millions of songs you are just not doing something correctly. Also, if someone figures out their server is getting backdoored they will fix the problem and you will find the link is invalid. This happens quite often.

Do a little snooping and you will hit a gold mine soon enough... for example, the other day I was looking for some Stones and found a guy who had ripped all their albums to his server....
I works about as well as the old Napstar did. I never used file sharing after they went tits up because of all the spyware so I don't know how well the new stuff works.

Just a question from a non-computer-expert. Wouldn't your IP address be available to any law enforcement folks through googles servers? If that were so, wouldn't you also be able to be nabbed for this just as easily as the file-sharing programs allow you to be? I have no idea if I'm anywhere near close, but just kind of thinking about possible glitches in the plan.

As for getting nabbed by using file-sharing programs, it's actually not the cops who are doing that. It's companies like the RIAA and MPAA, and they're not involving law enforcement, they're initiating civil lawsuits against people who they believe are downloading music and movies illegally.

The best file sharing program out there I've found is Shareaza. It's the only one I use anymore. No spyware, and you can connect to a bunch of different file sharing networks. It's like having 4 programs in one. Works very nicely.

Those of you that use iTunes may have noticed how you can listen to (but not download) other people's iTunes on your lan who have sharing turned on. Its a nice feature, as long as your connected to the network. However, someone has created an easy-to-find program with a rather humorous title called "ourTunes" that allows you two download anything that people have shared in iTunes, which will invariably be their whole music collection. While this is useless to those of you that are not on a big LAN, I have access to about 40 music collections (some of them very vast) because I get internet through a large network through my apartment complex. It would be quite convenient if I were into downloading music... and at 100 mbps the bandwidth can't be beat.
I typically buy my music by the album at www.allofmp3.com (thanks for the tip, Eric), at a buck or two per album, the prices can't be beat and they have a lot.

Has any one tried SkreemR? It is very similar to Ice's Google directory look up but it is more accurate when looking for particluar song/albums.
It's not filesharing, it simply searches the web for where someone has uploaded the mp3 to their site and then you download it.
