    Dead Dog Loop -- TR

Another fine trail description provided by our man, Fuzzy

TWO START-POINT OPTIONS: Either start from Toy Atwood Baseball complex on the north-end of 1100 east in Price, and head east on the two-track and up-around the H2O tank
    OR
Drive east on 800 north to the end of the pavement, turn left (north) and follow the dirt-road up-around the H2O tank .....Follow the dirt road past the big tin shed with the big fans. About 150 yds farther on your right there's a big square rock and a little yellow circle; if you're driving, park around here.....................From here go north another 1/2 mile or so to the fork in the road. go right and after a left-right-left and a hard right and take "WILD-BUNCH WASH", a fast, technical singletrack along a creek, OR stay left at the fork and go another 1+ miles 'till you pass a well-pump above you on your left.

Take the next right and cruise about 250 yds to the next pump-pad and "UPPER WILDBUNCH" starts on the east edgeof the pad, a FAST singletrack running down to and through the WASH. At the bottem of this run, you'll climb up the double-track to your right (west) to a gate. Go over or close it behind you. A bit past the gate is a short section of singletrack to your left, which puts you out onto a dirt road east...................Follow the dirt-road as it winds along the foot of the mesa for about 1/8 mile and take the left fork. As you curve-around right, a small square "headstone" on your left marks entry to BEN'S SWITCH-BACKS, one of the tougher climbs around; tight, winding singletrack through trees & rocks & roots and on VERY exposed switch-back turns. SWEET!!

At the top of the switchbacks, stop & breathe & look-around at the Book-Cliffs,the Manti-La Sal forest, and the San Refeal Swell, then head north about 80 yds and drop into the singletrack to the left just before the big pump. This winds along and down into BRUCE'S CREVASE, a tight, gnarly wash- crossing, and back up into DUSTY'S DETOUR. This part just keeps getting better with big rocks and logs to ride (or fall off of). You come out onto another pump-pad and cross to the dirt road, turning right at the "T".

In a minute, you'll come to a cattle guard, and the singletrack drops in about 10 feet past it on your left. In this section is TRENT'S ROCK (you'll know when you see it).

Now you drop down to the south down a short, steep face and onto the DEAD-DOG SPINE.<<<WARNING: EXPERTS ONLY!!>>>...THis spine is EXPOSED and TECHNICAL. Narrow BRIDGE sections across the DEAD DOG ROCKS are not to be taken lightly!! After the D.D. rocks the spine continues south and onto the south mesa. The singletrack skirts the edge around the whole mesa, finally droping into a FAST downhill with several natural & articicial options, back down to the valley floor........................Across one more pump-pad, out the dirt-road, and 1/4 mile back to the square-rock / yellow circle parking spot., then it's downhill back to town.................................Allow for 2-4 hours if you're an animal, 3-5 if you're human, and plan accordingly. This one's a butt kicker!

    Thanks Fuzzy!

Google earth image, and location tool.

I believe this image is showing the entrance to the wild bunch wash.

Let me know if I'm wrong.

Also, click on the location tool to show you how to get up here.

    Well...

Wild-Bunch Wash actually ends at the S-turn dirt-road in the mid-upper-left if the google pic'. That's where we turn, go around the S, and hit Ben's Switchbacks up the side of the mesa (a kid named Ben got his Eagle helping me build the switchbacks). The wash is too boulder-strewn below there to ride.

I just finished our new map, and I'm gonna try to post a printable one on here as soon as I have it in PDF.

Oh, OK. So more like the image below? I may have the little "pin" marker where you enter the wash?

    Thanks for the correction.

Totally wicked! I had no idea there were so many trails that y'all rode up there. I've done the Kenilworth loop dozens of times, and driven on every double-track road north of Price, but seeing all the singletrack laid out on the map surprised me. I like the "Shh..." part, now I know where I'll be riding Monday? ;)

I also noticed the blue line running up Alrad Canyon. Do you know if PASS has any plans for trails up either there or Cordingly Canyon? I rode (well, ok, "pushed") my bike up Alrad Canyon two years ago, all the way to the top, and it was awesome. There could be some amazing singletrack to be made up there, if only the climb wasn't so bad.

...I was just below that gate monday when it started snowin'.

...as for singletrack connecting the two canyons...

    ...

It was good to meet you the other day. You should were a helmet.

Agreed--I have a helmet, but have never wore it. After riding Allen's Alley downhill on Monday, it convinced me that I should be wearing it.

BTW, I was walking south from Pioneer Park Monday after it had been snowing for quite a while, and it was nearly dark, and guess who I saw coming down off Wood Hill between the "C"s? I was crossing 500 North when you were starting to ride up the hill above the park, you must have had a very long day of riding since it was 4 or 5 hours after I'd met you on Luke's.
