Thread: How many canyons have you done?

How many canyons have you done?

The other day at the very under attended uutah BBQ. Price said that he had done a different canyon nearly every weekend this summer and beyond. I am curious to find out a real number. I am sure Shane will chime in with some absurd number. Sooner or later I am going to figure out what I have been up to over the last year. I will make a list with dates and post it here. Perhaps with links to the TR's as well. It should be an extensive list. Anyone care to do the same or give an idea. Could be just this year or total. Whatever.......

Yeah, I've been busy this summer, but I bet I haven't been the busiest.

    Since Memorial Day Weekend:

    Pine Creek,
    Echo
    Subway
    Leprechaun
    The Squeeze
    Pine Creek again
    Keyhole
    Mystery
    Cable
    Spry
    Imlay
    Behunin
    Misery
    Little Blue John
    Alcatraz
    Mind Bender
    Not Mind Bender
    Eye of the Needle.

Not canyons, but this summer I've also:
    Climbed the Grand Teton
Gone through the Darby Canyon Ice Caves twice
    Bouldered my ass off
    Mountain biked hundreds of miles
and I kissed a girl or two ;)

Yup, you gave me an oportunity to brag and I took it. I'm feeling a little worthless today, but the Howl is tonight, so we'll see what happens. :)
It's my job to call the BS around here. Get over it.

I already started a thread similar to this over on the Yahoo forums a few months ago. From that thread I learned that Shane has done something like 55 canyons this year (which is slightly lower than average?), Tom Jones has done around 45.

    My list for this year:

    1. Ding/Dang Loop
    2. Little Wild Horse
    3. Mindbender
    4. Not Mindbender
    5. West Fork Blue John to the Great Gallery
    6. North Fork Robber's Roost
    7. Imlay
    8. Upper Chute
    9. Burro Wash
    10. The Squeeze
    11. Zero Gravity

This is actually a pretty good year for me. Usually I get in about 7 or 8 a year.

This has been a really slow year for me but here is my list for the year to date.

    Burro
    Cable
    Baptist
    Das Boot
    Echo
    Subway
    Keyhole
    Bootleg
    Pine Creek
    Cottonwood
    Sandthrax
    Sulphur
    Adobe Swale
    Zero Gravity
    Iron Wash
    Lomatium
    Tierdrop
    Entrajo
    Boundary
    Hidden Falls
    Not Mindbender
    Mindbender
    Alcatraz
    Quandary Canyon
    Knotted Rope
    Red Cave
    Imlay Canyon

And a couple I'm not allowed to talk about.

I'm sure I forget a couple, some I did more then once.

Hell, half the ones on your list I've never heard of. Tierdrop? Lomatium? Boundary?

Dude, when are you and I ever gonna hook up?

Rock and Acca are the ones that got me interested this year, even though I haven't had time to do much.

I've only done Ding, Dang, and LWH. I've done LWH for years, with my family everytime they go to Goblin Valley.

Those are the only 3 I've done.

A couple years ago I tried to do "Water Holes Canyon". This is just south of Page, AZ. It looked pretty cool, but we didn't have time to do it. We were already late on our way down to Havasu Canyon.

Here's a link for more info on it. Anybody done it?

Boundary is in the Circle of Friends.... Tierdrop and Lomatium have other issues that would need to be resolved before I could post them. BUT... We can go down and do them later this year if ya like they are Moab area good winter canyons. My life should be getting much easier at the end of this month.

Ya, name the day. My life gets significantly easier at the end of this month too (end of the semester).

Moab canyons huh? I'm intrigued. An earlier thread in the hiking section mentioned the lack of slot canyons around Moab. I could do nothing but agree. The only one that I know of is the Medieval Chamber.

There HAS TO be others out there, and don't tell me to go explore the sandstone fins in Arches - those are more or less "pseudo-slots." They're short and don't really fit the classical slot canyon description. Without divulging any info on "secret canyons," could you at least say whether or not slot canyons of the caliber of The Squeeze or Cable or Mindbender exist around the Moab area?

I know you are asking Shane and no I don't have an answer for you. One thing I do know however was a few years ago I was down at the Jeep Safari. I wasn't into the technical canyoneering thing at the time, but anyway we were going down some random jeep trail (I have tried to remember and asked some of the people I was with and no one can remember exactly which trail it was). Someone broke down it was a long wait while they fixed it. We were parked near a vast expanse of slickrock, so a friend, my girlfriend at the time, and me went running around exploring the area. From the top of the slickrock we could see a long, winding, narrow slot cutting through. We went to the spot that the slot dropped into the sandy desert, but it was about a 20 - 25 ft. drop, and we couldn't quite climb up and into the canyon. I've wanted to find out where we were and go back to check it out again, but unfortunately as I said before no one can remember where we were. It does however make me not buy the fact that there are no slots around Moab. I'd be interested to find out if any of them are any good too.

    Eric.

P.S. Kelsey has a description on professor creek in his non-tech Colorado Plateau book. It's a flowing, non-tech slot near Moab. Haven't been there but supposedly it's decent.

I'll bet you could find it using Google Earth

It's got great resolution in the Moab area, and be sure to use the tilt feature, so you can see the structures in 3D. If you can roughly remember the direction from town you were at, you could probably find the trail, and have the same viewpoint that you remember.

Use the attachment below to take you right to Moab, looking towards Lion's back, and Hell's Revenge.

Lomation is not really secret. Its guided by a popular Moab guide
    http://www.deserthighlights.com/trip...y.htm#lomatium

Problem is if it gets much traffic I'm pretty sure it would be closed down....

But to help you out the pic below was taken while standing in Lomatium Canyon

Wow!! That's awesome! Sort of looks like a larger version of Neon Canyon.

Ya, Explorer Magazine had a little article about Moab in November's issue. They mentioned that Deserthighlights guide tours down through Lomatium Canyon for get this.....$140 a person!!!

I'll think about that the next time I do my next canyon adventure....for free.

I actually think that is really cheap..... the trip includes lunch and entrance fee to a pay area.

The guide service has to pay insurance (big killer for companies), taxes, pay employees, pay for office space, telephone bills, yada, yada..... as a small business owner I can tell you this is a bargin price..... hell, you pay $75 per hour to get your car worked on at the shop!
