    San Juan River Trip

Went on a family rafting trip down the San Juan over Spring Break. We spent 3 nights, 4 days on the river. This is a very family trip with only one rapid that could maybe be considered class 3. We had lots of little kids: from age 6 on up, and a lot of fun.

Sweet! Looks like a good time. Is that your raft? You da man with the two chicks! Where are the rapids. Perhaps not on this river? Looks like you were camping?

Not much for rapids. This one was definitely for the good company, awesome scenery, and amazing side canyon hikes and swims.

I would be very interested to go on this with my wife and some friends. Where do you put in?

    How much are rental fees?

    Where do you pull out?

Do you need permits? Any entrance fees?

Well, just how close are these "cousins"? And I mean, every girl is a high school girl at some point, right?

Just kidding, but we would like our viewers to know, we don't want to discriminate anybody.

Is that why it says Daddy on the side?

There are two possible put ins : the towns of Bluff or Mexican Hat. Take out is at Clay Hills Crossing. It is 4 or 5 days from Bluff and 3 or 4 days from Mexican Hat. A BLM permit is mandatory, and these are obtained by applying to a lottery application in January for the following year. The trip must be run in High Water, because Sand Bars are a really big problem at the bottom end. This means End of April to mid-June, and a good water year. There are some fees that go with the permit, and a lot of regulations you have to follow such as carrying out trash and human-waste, fire-pans, first aid kits, patch kits, etc.
I don't know anything about boat rentals although i'm sure there are places that rent them. Guide services are available, and they take care of everything. River trips are a ton of work to prepare and pack for, but can be very rewarding.

Another option would be to do it in Inflatable kayaks or canoes later in the year. This would be more like a backpacking trip, because you'd have to pack very efficiently, but it could be very fun and rewarding. The sand bars wouldn't be much of a problem this way, but it'd probably take a few more days because the river would be really slow.
