BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A woman is in critical condition after falling dozens of feet while rock climbing Tuesday in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
The 25-year-old woman fell about 50 feet while rock climbing, according to Lt. Justin Hoyal with the Unified Police Department. Hoyal said the woman was hiking with a co-worker in the Storm Mountain area and the two were not far from the trail when they decided to rappel down about 70 feet.
As the woman started rappelling, she lost her footing due to the slick conditions, Hoyal said. She fell about 50 feet and rolled another 20 feet.
The woman's co-worker called for help, and search and rescue crews were dispatched to the area shortly after 7 p.m.
The woman was transported to IMC in critical condition with injuries to her face and head.
