Spencer Canyon & Birch Hollow
I finally headed out and got some canyoneering in this weekend. First ones since April. Neither of them overly difficult, but still fun nonetheless.
The original plan was to leave Thursday and meet up with some friends in the Escalante area and do canyons Fri, Sat & Sun. Then my son Kyler decided he was coming down to St. George on Friday night from Provo so I didn't really want to leave for the weekend, and then my wife didn't get home until 11pm on Thursday. So in natural canyoneering style, we got up at 330 am and drove to Escalante, met up with our group and did a small side drainage off Spencer canyon that Rick Green named KFC, and then finished out lower Spencer. It only had 3 raps in it, but the canyon hadn't been done for a while as there was some pretty nasty webbing or no webbing at all on the drops. I opted to not take a wetsuit and with some careful stemming was able to keep about waist deep from the pools.
We got back to the vehicles about 530 pm, loaded up and drove back to St. George that night. Lots of driving, but good times spent with good friends.
Saturday we spent doing some family stuff, then Sunday another canyon was planned. A few dry options were talked about. Boundary, Not Imlay, Portal, then we convinced my mom to come with us, so we settled on Birch as it would be a little easier for her.
Nothing too dramatic or eventful, but we had a great time and it was good to get some canyoneering in again. I feel pretty fortunate to be less than 6 months out and able to about whatever I want to again.
