Sears files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, to close 142 more stores

Sears — which was the largest retailer in the nation before the rise of Walmart and, later, Amazon.

Sears Holdings will close another 142 stores by about the end of the year, on top of a recently announced round of 46 store closures, as part of the bankruptcy. The company still had 506 Sears locations, including 482 full-line department stores, as well as 360 Kmart stores, as of an Aug. 4 public filing.
