I was down in Zion that weekend 2010. Trekking up Orderville as ash rained down from the fire. It was a little apocalyptic, let me tell ya.
Yep. Got in about 25 canyons this year and hope to add a few more at FreezeFest. The rest of the group, including the wife, has rotated through. A new child sure makes getting us both out in the same canyon more difficult...Quote:

I enjoyed reading this trip. Nice job in getting through it!
Reminded me of the last canyon I did. I told myself, "hey - I never use the med kit, all these granola bars, and extra water; I'll just leave it behind and save some weight". That was the only time I left that stuff, and the one time I needed it all. We ended up route finding on cliffs in the dark and cold. Not fun.

No injury, no SAR mission. You got a couple of extra days in the backcountry. I believe the your trip was a success for the simple reason that you brought your wife along. That leaves no one at home to prematurely alert the authorities. I sometimes worry that if I am a few hours late I will be hearing the thump thump thump of the helicopters. Of course I deal with this by adding buffer time to when my wife should expect to hear from me.
Perhaps some day I will have the courage to share some of my more bone head trips-what am I saying-they never happened.
