WOW indeed. I wonder what was in that building that disintegrated. The video in that last link from what looks like a restaurant nearby, you could see the building just disappear. Crazy. I hope they evacuated the place before it went up.

Yeah, anyone that was anywhere near that thing is either dead or seriously injured. KSL had a video on facebook showing a lot of rubble, mess, and wounded people wandering around looking lost.

I don't think the ammonium nitrate just blew up all by itself. It needs a large explosive charge to set it off... or it needs to be soaked in diesel fuel and ignited.

I know the media is now saying burning fireworks triggered 2700 tons of ammonium nitrate, but based on the sounds and colors and the pressure wave, I suspect rocket fuel was the first wave followed by something else, possibly even the ammonium nitrate, if not explosives. Either way, some bad joo-joo was afoot regardless.
Look up "Worlds largest non nuclear explosions"...pretty interesting. Also look up "Normal Accidents"...regardless of what "safeguards" are taken, I wonder how big the next one will be?

Man, you guys like your conspiracy theories. I work with rocket propellant/motors for a living (nearly 40 years now). I have only worked with AN containing motors once, for a very brief period of time. I have no idea how this stuff was being stored, but I'm sure it wasn't being monitored, or taken care of, or maintained, or anything. AN interacts with relative humidity. And if it is exposed to rust (maybe from the containers, maybe flakes from the building) or other metal oxides, along with high enough relative humidity, it can form a material that is extremely shock sensitive - as in a slamming door could set it off. At least that's what I remember from ~13 years ago. I also think salt in the air from the ocean could do something similar if the containers were leaky (and I'd bet my house they were in poor shape). Or if there were any kind of combustibles in the building that could come in contact (paper, cardboard, oily rags, leaky drums of oil - anything), that would be enough to cause this explosion, even without fireworks right next door. Lebanese officials might like the idea of a missile or some other form of sabotage because that might lessen their culpability, but you don't need it to get a tragedy like this. Negligence, incompetence, and some time are more than enough.Quote:

I can tell a lot less than you might think from the videos. I can see that it is a deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT; you can read about this in Wikipedia). I can see the water and NO2 decomposition products. I can tell the NO2 from its color, but I looked for that when I heard it was ammonium nitrate. Same thing with the water.
