Chicago police union wants a federal investigation into Smollett case
Text messages obtained by CNN through an open records request show Smollett family friend Tina Tchen — a former chief of staff for first lady Michelle Obama and a lawyer — reached out to Foxx on February 1. Tchen wrote the family had “concerns about the investigation.”https://fox17online.com/2019/03/27/c...smollett-case/

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s furor continued Wednesday as he accused actor Jussie Smollett of abusing the city and taking its anti-hate values and turning them “upside down and inside out.”
The politician appeared on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday to discuss the stunning reversal in the “Empire” actor’s case from the day before. That’s when prosecutors dropped charges that alleged the actor staged a racial and homophobic January attack against himself and then lied to police about it.
“He’s saying he’s innocent and his words aren’t true,” Emanuel said, citing the opposing narratives among Smollett, police and prosecutors. “They better get their story straight because this is actually making fools of all of us.”

Seriously though, has there been ANY valid explanation as to why the charges were dropped, besides the dollar sign?
other than notoriety and $10,000, a bit of community service and an obama--it's all good.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office said Tuesday that after reviewing the case, Smollett's community service and his willingness to turn his bond over to the city, "we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case."The Cook County State's Attorney's Office said in a statement that their decision to dismiss the charges was not an unusual practice.

Former Deputy Asst. Attorney General: Kim Foxx Faces Up to 20 Years in Jail if Convicted of Corruption

Clearly, he had friends in high places...but I reckon the DA decided that the only person he hurt was himself.
How do you punish a guy for for that? Probably would have been different if there were riots, but I think anybody with half a brain smelled BS all over this thing. I know I did.
When this "news" broke and they made sure to emphasize that he was gay, I figured he was out that late looking to hook up and got his ass kicked...then made up the story.
Every police department in Cook County just gave the State's attorney a "no confidence" vote.

The prosecutors from across Illinois have rejected the plea deal. From the Illinois Prosecutors Bar Association:
"The manner in which this case was dismissed was abnormal and unfamiliar to those who practice law in criminal courthouses across the State. Prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges alike do not recognize the arrangement Mr. Smollett received. Even more problematic, the State’s Attorney and her representatives have fundamentally misled the public on the law and circumstances surrounding the dismissal."
The rest of the statement is justifiably harsh.

Scott, what's going to happen? Can they still bring charges against Smollett?
From the statement:
"Prosecutors must be held to the highest standard of legal ethics in the pursuit of justice. The actions of the Cook County State’s Attorney have fallen woefully short of this expectation. Through the repeated misleading and deceptive statements to the public on Illinois law and circumstances surrounding the Smollett dismissal, the State’s Attorney has failed in her most fundamental ethical obligations to the public. The IPBA condemns these actions. This irregular arrangement was an affront to prosecutors across the State, the Chicago Police Department, victims of hate crimes, and the people of the City of Chicago and Cook County. "
So? Now what? The IPBA comes out with a bunch of legal-eze condemning the outcome and then that's it? Is there going to be action taken against Kim Foxx, or will the Illinois Prosecutors Bar Association be content with wearing egg on their faces forever after this incident because Smollett has friends in high places and so justice be damned?
I do not know Illinois law, but where the case was dismissed it seems unlikely. Prosecutors can't overstep their jurisdiction and if Kim Foxx is the decision maker for that particular jurisdiction then it seems like a done deal. Also, I don't know how the dismissal was done. The file is sealed so fast and without notice so no one can see how it was done. In Utah, if the charges were dismissed "without prejudice" they could be refiled. If they were dismissed "with prejudice" then it is over. The only real charges that could be viable, it seems, that would be outside of the scope of Ms. Foxx, would be if the feds could come up with some federal charges. That, obviously, is a different jurisdiction.
