Nice. I'd cross if I was there. 83% of the fed govt is running. Closing the parks is an Obama middle finger that needs to be broken off.
I knew about this and would have participated if I could have gone. I appreciated the fact that they asked participants not to take down any barricades but instead pick up any trash during their visit. Seems to be a great LNT example to me.
It's high time the government and it's agencies realize whom they work for. The national parks belong to THE PEOPLE, NOT the park service or the rangers. I'm all for stripping them of their bombed out 4X4 vehicles with every communication device known to mankind, their shotguns, their sidearms, their bloated paychecks and pension plans, etc, etc. That goes double for the politicians in Washington DC. The WWII veterans scored something of a victory at the vet's memorial... hard for the cops to 'get tough' with a bunch of 90 year olds in wheelchairs, eh??? Michele Bachmann saw an opportunity and jumped in for her photo-op but she's just another money grubbing, hypocritical, ego-tripping actor like the rest of the pigs in Washington. I saw a video clip exposing Paul and McConnell discussing their 'strategy' and did a Google search to verify what I heard. Curiously, lots of 'hits', but every single video clip has been taken down. What does that tell you?
Yes, we need much more of this civil disobedience. If I were anywhere near a national park, and/or had some time off to travel, I'd be doing it myself. They can't keep us from the lands that we own. What's next? Calling in the military to keep us out of the National Forests? Someone told me that the restrooms in American Fork Canyon have been closed with signs explaining it's because of the government shut down.
"Someone told me that the restrooms in American Fork Canyon have been closed with signs explaining it's because of the government shut down." Yeah, as if they take such great care of the toilets when they ARE open. Like, where's the f'ing toilet paper???? HAHA
I am bummed that I did not get the invite. Another Milligan!~
Tourists are devastated by this. It's down right wrong! Imagine coming from another country to be met by this foolishness!
I think that very high above the rangers sit some folks that want to make this as painful as possible because they want the public to blame their political opposition and they made this decision. The rangers didn't make this decision and I'm sure they are just trying to carry out the instructions they have been given. Ironic that I find myself defending rangers as my usual path crossing with them is just: checking my flies in Yellowstone looking for lead, or telling me no climbing is allowed in Cap Reef (not true),etc. But I feel for the rangers now. I am a Libertarian and cannot even stand the permit system that makes me get permission JUST TO WALK OVER AND LOOK AT the Wave, so I really hate this. But I don't blame the rangers for the shut down though I am also very upset about this. It kept me out of Yellowstone this weekend. Rangers and I generally rub each other the wrong way (not always and just a little), but for me they get a pass on this one. Not the ones to blame.
the video is still available from many news sources. one youtube video that some sources had embedded was taken down for whatever reason. but "every single video clip" has not been taken down and youtube has multiple versions of the clip. enjoy :2thumbs:

Here is an interesting read about the making of the shutdown:

I guess that brings to question, what have the Dems compromised on?

Of course, there are ways into Yellowstone and any of our National Parks if you want to take the trouble to go in the hard way. I'm just sayin' if people can sneak across the border from Mexico into the U.S., it shouldn't be too difficult to get inside any of the park boundaries, which I'd do if I had the time off. The thing is, we shouldn't have to. It ain't their land.
If I lived out there, I'd be right there with them. It's awesome that it was more than just a "hop the fence" and "get back at the man", and they did some good stuff while there. Unfortunately, the park rangers are mere pawns in this ridiculous political game. Someone else posted about their "bloated" salaries. The average park ranger barely makes $30k a year. Hardly bloated. And do they have a retirement program? Of course they do. But everyone who works for the fed gov gets a retirement. It isn't some extravagant pension, so I don't know why there is ranger bashing. Regular citizens have 401k's and county workers have pensions as well. Having a pension is nothing to be scoffed at and hated. You work for an entity for three decades, I think you should get something in return if you pay into it.
I am completely against the government telling people where and when they can go somewhere in America. The land in this country is for the people. Permits and lottery systems to gain access to lands are the most ridiculous forms of control I have ever seen, but oddly I understand why they do it. If some of these areas weren't protected to a certain degree, human traffic would destroy them. There are people that respect nature and respect natural geological features. There are others who mark it with graffiti, discard their trash and waste carelessly, and break things just for the sake of doing it. The National Park system keeps people "honest", for the most part. The rangers do their best to educate people and keep an eye on people while they are in the park and prevent vandalism or mistreatment.

And when you are ordered to do something and you don't want to lose your job, sometimes you get caught in things you don't want to get caught in. The park rangers all didn't just band together to decide to do all these things. They receive their orders from higher sources. If you're going to get angry, get angry at the idiots you vote into office, and get angry at the morons running this country in THEIR best interest, and not that of the PEOPLE.
What has either side compromised on, and why should compromise be an issue in a continuing resolution to fund the government. Republicans have voted to repeal the ACA 41 times and failed, made it a key issue in the last presidential election and got their asses handed to them and now attach a defunding bit of nonsense to the continuing resolution so the dems have to compromise? What is that definition of insanity again? :lol8:
Just curious if the Dems have offered any type of compromise to meet the Reps in the middle on anything.
In the middle of what? This is a tea party orchestrated stunt and there is no middle in a hostage negotiation. The ACA should never have been an issue in the first place, why should anyone have to compromise to get it back off the table where it belongs? This whole thing is the tea party scaring the rest of the GOP into holding the country hostage, and this country doesn't negotiate with terrorists. :nono:
So that's a NO then.
Just curious. I mean no matter how childish the Reps are, the Dems are the mature ones, correct? Shouldn't they take the high ground? I'm just wondering if the Dems are doing anything at all besides saying how bad the Tea Party is, if they are doing anything about it, or just waiting for the "childish" ones to grow up. That would be a bad strategy, yes?
Again, the ACA should not be a part of the continuing resolution. Just because a childish demand is made doesn't mean you have to start bargaining.

Well, I'm clearly not your intellectual equal (and very happy about that), so let me save you a little time: I'm also completely ambivalent to your opinion of me.

It's too bad this thread has degenerated into personal attacks....
We are all in trouble because of what's happening in Washington. This same behavior playing out on the national stage.
^^^^ Now wait a minute, what would this be if I couldn't add to this discussion? :lol8: And if we are all going to get our panties all bunched up, throw this where it belongs, where you are fully warned in what may transpire, the Political Arena. :fitz:
Liberal attempt :haha:
:2thumbs: There is no conspiracy there. Both have made statements such as that in public. So, if they say that when they believe the mic is off and say the same things to the citizens of this country... Not bad people at all. Unlike Obama's continued pussification of the United States.

How the hell have you been? :haha: Ahhh, it's comical now how they still cling to that wool over their eyes while drinking that triple packet of :bert:
:roflol:Good stuff, mains!
Thank you James Milligan! From Tanya Milligan. ;) My husband has a boatload of brothers, but none named James! That bunch is from Texas. I have to drive hubby and son to the airport in Vegas, so I will jump the fence that day, but I can't promise what time. It all depends on hubby's schedule. I drive through the park to go to Vegas, maybe I will jump a few fences along the way. The only problem is that I bet the rangers there don't want the park closed either. I don't want to hassle them, but join them in their voice to get the parks open. Washington county is doing this in court. I hope it's done by this weekend.
Ps... It's snowing here on the east side of Zion today. That is going to hamper visitors even more! The snow is not sticking yet though, but it's falling heavy.
