Ben Harper's latest album, Both Sides of the Gun, wasn't a great album. Too long, too repetitive, too falsely political. Ben has always been a political writer, but the songs on this album that were supposed to be political, such as "Black Water" and "Please Don't Talk About Murder While I'm Eating" felt forced. In the past he had some true anger, and that's what made his political songs feel righteous.
I really liked his previous album: Diamonds on the Inside. But, you're right, it did sound a lot like Burn to Shine, with a little added funkiness. The song "
My Own Two Hands" (Windows Media Stream) is one of my favorite BH songs.
You can't say that There Will be a Light sounds anything like his other albums. The gospel collaboration with The Blind Boys of Alabama has a totally different feel than any other whole album BH has recorded. (Although, he has included gospel songs on his older albums). I like all the songs off There Will be a Light individually, but all together it's a little too much Jesus for me.
Wait a second...this isn't supposed to be an album review thread. I'll shut up now.
