Pirate Bay Moves to The Cloud, Becomes Raid-Proof
October 17, 2012
The Pirate Bay has made an important change to its infrastructure. The world’s most famous BitTorrent site has switched its entire operation to the cloud. From now on The Pirate Bay will serve its users from several cloud hosting providers scattered around the world. The move will cut costs, ensure better uptime, and make the site virtually invulnerable to police raids — all while keeping user data secure.
The Pirate Bay is loved by millions of file-sharers but is also a thorn in the side of the entertainment industries.
The latter group continues to push authorities to take action against the site. The Pirate Bay was raided back in 2006 and there are rumors that the police might try again in the near future.
The Pirate Bay is not oblivious to this looming threat. They have backups in place and are shielding the true location of their servers. Nevertheless, should the site lose all its servers it might take a while to get back online.
This is one of the reasons why The Pirate Bay decided to move the site into the cloud yesterday. The switch resulted in five minutes downtime and was hardly noticed by the public, but it’s a big change for the infamous BitTorrent site.
Hosting in the cloud also makes the site easier to scale, it reduces downtime, and is also cheaper.
“Moving to the cloud lets TPB move from country to country, crossing borders seamlessly without downtime. All the servers don’t even have to be hosted with the same provider, or even on the same continent,” The Pirate Bay told TorrentFreak.
The Pirate Bay is currently hosted at cloud hosting companies in two countries where they run several Virtual Machine (VM) instances.
“Running on VMs cuts down operation costs and complexity. For example, we never need anyone to do hands-on work like earlier this month when we were down for two days because someone had to fix a broken power distribution unit,” The Pirate Bay says.
The setup also makes it possible for the BitTorrent site to take their business elsewhere without too much hassle.
“If one cloud-provider cuts us off, goes offline or goes bankrupt, we can just buy new virtual servers from the next provider. Then we only have to upload the VM-images and reconfigure the load-balancer to get the site up and running again.”
While most of Pirate Bay’s former servers are now obsolete, not everything was moved to the cloud.
The load balancer and transit-routers are still owned and operated by The Pirate Bay, which allows the site to hide the location of the cloud provider. It also helps to secure the privacy of the site’s users.
The hosting providers have no idea that they’re hosting The Pirate Bay, and even in the event they found out it would be impossible for them to gather data on the users.
“All communication with users goes through TPB’s load balancer, which is a disk-less server with all the configuration in RAM. The load balancer is not in the same country as the transit-router or the cloud servers,” The Pirate Bay told us.
“The communication between the load balancer and the virtual servers is encrypted. So even if a cloud provider found out they’re running TPB, they can’t look at the content of user traffic or user’s IP-addresses.”
In addition The Pirate Bay now believes it’s more raid proof.
The worst case scenario is that The Pirate Bay loses both its transit router and its load balancer. All the important data is backed up externally on VMs that can be re-installed at cloud hosting providers anywhere in the world.
“If the police decide to raid us again there are no servers to take, just a transit router. If they follow the trail to the next country and find the load balancer, there is just a disk-less server there. In case they find out where the cloud provider is, all they can get are encrypted disk-images,” The Pirate Bay says.
“They have to be quick about it too, if the servers have been out of communication with the load balancer for 8 hours they automatically shut down. When the servers are booted up, access is only granted to those who have the encryption password,” they add.
For Pirate Bay users the move to the cloud doesn’t change much though. If anything, they will notice significantly less downtime.
Just finished the first 8 episodes of breaking bad S05
Just watched UFC 153 last night, and afterwards spent the $55 bucks I would've given to DirecTV on groceries. :fitz:
American Horror Story. I'm a huge fan of horror and each show is like an hour long horror flick. Pretty awesome. Also picked up the latest seasons of Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad, True Blood, Hell on Wheels, and Weeds. Might have to stop playing Halo to get through it all...
Picked up "Brave" for the hot young stripper wife last night.
Watched Killer Joe on Christmas Eve. It was a good movie if you like messed up. It certainly got me in the Christmas spirit watching a couple of the beatings.... ha-ha

Got to love the screened season...
Watched This is 40 last night... great flick. Same with Lincoln and Looper... all were entertaining, but This is 40 was the best.
Downloaded Sky fall and The Hobbit to watch this week.

Django Unchained
Seven Psychopaths
The impossible
Hitchcock
Might be my favorite thread :D Thanks Iceaxe for recommendations.
Over the weekend I saw This is 40, Looper and Flight. I downloaded the other films but I'm yet to watch them. I am wondering whether I should see The Hobbit at the theater instead of on my PC.
I seldom watch movies on my PC because the picture is never as good (And my PC has a new state of the art 30" monitor). I always burn the movies to DVD or put them on a zip drive so the family can watch them at their leisure.
I also gain anther HUGE bonus from the movies.... we are out of town most weekends and we NEVER have an issue finding a house sitter. We have a couple people we use for house sitting and they know I'll always have a stack of great movies form them to watch .
:2thumbs:
Thank God for screener season because Tv during the holidays blows....
Anyhoo.... I downloaded and watched "Gravity" last night. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a movie as much as I enjoyed Gravity.
Most movies now days have so many plot holes I can't stand to watch them. Gravity only had a couple plot holes and they take an understanding of orbital mechanics to uncover.
I'm giving Gravity five stars. I bet it wins big on the award circuit.
Tap'n on my Galaxy G3
That's one movie I was super glad I saw on the big screen. It was such an amazing visual spectacle I doubt the TV could have done it justice. I was so blown away watching some of those scenes! Def an amazing movie either way though. :)
Have you tried 1channel on XBMC? Just run an HDMI cable between your computer and TV and you have every movie or TV show ever made at your finger tips. No need to torrent and burn, just press a couple buttons and start playing it in seconds. Not a good demo video, but you get the idea.

Downloaded "Rush" and watched it. It's by far the best movie I have seen in the past 10 years.
Tap'n on my Galaxy G3
No, unfortunately I don't really. I'm still a bit new to anything beyond putting the now archaic DVD in the machine. So, download XBMC and then it has an option on it called "Channel 1" and once that it selected a gazillion TV and movie options are available??
Pretty much yeah... Just install XBMC on your computer, then follow this 5 minute setup guide. Then you will have every movie and every TV show ever made at your finger tips. It works shockingly good and is free.

Edit: Let me know if you have any troubles. It's a little tricky your 1st time through, Might take 10 minutes instead of 5 :)
Anybody here use TorGuard for their BitTorrent services? I just noticed a great deal, $23.50 for a year by using this coupon code at checkout:
TGLifetime50
It's also pretty easy to set up the amazon fire stick with TVMC. I ran TVMC on the tablet and sent it the chromecast and haven't had to torrent anything in over a year since doing it this way. Way easier and you can find almost everything. Now with the fire stick it's even easier. I prefer Genesis over 1Channel. If you use the chromecast or firestick ($40) then you just plug it into the HDMI port on your TV and you're good to go with any movie or tv show you can imagine!
Nobody torrents anymore. Why do that? You can stream everything, in better quality, any time you want with TVMC. Plus you avoid the whole download/own it thing. I think it's a bit more legally ambiguous to stream than to download as well. If you actually want to have a drive somewhere full of movie files than I think torrenting still makes sense but now the only time i still download something is if I'm flying somewhere and want a usb stick full of material or if I'm going to be somewhere without WIFI for awhile.
Predator (1987)
Gotta love screener season.... I watched Concussion, Creed and The Revenant, all are excellent. Will Smith will probably win a bunch of shit for Concussion.
I have Joy, Spotlight, Hateful Eight, The Martion, Steve Jobs and Heart of the Sea for later in the week.
The kids have the cam version of Star Wars which is a pretty good copy for a cam that came out two days after the release. The kids saw the movie opening day at the theater but have since watched the cam half a dozen times.
Has anybody seen Matt Damon's embarrassment, The Wall? WTF, what a stupid movie. I want my bandwidth back.
Is that different then Trumps wall? A friend was asking.
LOL
I can't get my torrent files to work anymore. I used to use bitcomet but I have stopped because it won't finish my downloads. They get to 90% then they just stop. What are you cool kids using these days? Have torrents fallen out of fashion? Is there something better out there?
