Bogley Family Fest - Zion - May 2010

That's a tough one, Don. I'm comfortable with my 13 and 11 year olds, but E's a little younger. On the other hand, it's one you and one him - a very good ratio. Personally, I think that in your shoes I would talk to him about it - impress on him just how real the danger is if he is careless, but also what an amazing experience it is. If he's willing, and you're comfortable that he takes it seriously, then go for it! Of course, you know better just how reliable he is - whether he can be counted on to not horse around.

Wow, campground's full huh? FF - oh, yes, I'll be there. It's definitely a go this year.

I've never been. Cedar City is about 50 miles (I think) from the I-15 split, and Kanarra is S. of Cedar so it's prolly anywhere from 20 - 30 miles out of your way I'm guessing.
My plans are subject to change depending on the mood of the kids! I don't know what to expect, but I'm hoping they're gonna love it & I think this hike is pretty mild mannered.

Food Fest is right! I think for the BFF "Bogley Family Fest" you & Cody ought to do another seafood stew or whatever that dish was at FF.

I took my girls up there when they were 14 & 16 & I was super worried the whole time. Just over-protective mom stuff...I kept telling them to be careful, and hold onto the chains, etc. I stayed close behind in spots so I could catch them if they fell (yeah right). I was probably annoying the hell out of them, because they were being careful, but a mom's a mom I guess.
I think it's pretty safe as long as you stay on the trail and watch your footing. One of the biggest problems I see is that too many people try and skirt around slow-pokes. You just have to be patient with so many people up there. Don't skirt around the traffic but stay on the trail.
There are some places on & especially off the trail where you can get ball-bearing sandy spots & you have to be cognizant of that.

It was a great experience for all of us.

I think it can be done safely with kids. You need to instill a sense of seriousness and if they are inclined to freak out about heights it wouldn't be a good idea. I did it with Aaron when he was maybe 9 years-old? He also did Half Dome at a young age, but I did short-rope him to me for that.

This seems to always happen when it comes to me attending Bogley events.

My Dad and my brothers and I are going on our once in a life time road trip, and it got bumped back a week to the same time as the Bogley fest. Sorry I'll miss seeing you guys and your (seemingly) wonderful families.

I'm still planning on being there! Not so sure about Angels Landing with my 6 year old?? He's gotten to be such a strong hiker over the last year and I would be totally interested in doing something with a bit less exposure. I would also love to do a short canyon maybe with my oldest, Ben. Looking forward to it!!!

Took my 7 year old up there last summer. I had him on a harness, but there were plenty of other kids that age up there without.

Now I've got to get Aaron to get a lot of school work done this weekend to make this all possible...

So excited to chill with you Ms. Randi!!!!!!!!! And we will be two campsites apart. Woohoo!! Yes girl. I have been riding long and strong the past month or so and I am feeling it. But we are only little sprouts on this big, bad-ass globe for a short period of time.......might as well make it a good ride. :nod::wink:

ps- my friend Deb can't make it. She is campsite 15 and hasn't canceled her reservation yet. If anyone would like it that hasn't booked a spot yet, let me know and we can make arrangements for you to have it.

I am living half here and half there! I am SOOOOO looking forward to this camp trip to take a break from everyday life. I can almost smell the campfire....

I'm still trying to make this happen. If I can bring the family down, we won't be there until late Friday night and we'll leave Sunday early afternoon. I'll let you guys know.

I just had some friends go through Keyhole and the water is nice and clean!!! Apparently the log on rap 1 is now down in the hole and a new one is down there with it. The corridor at the end has been shortened considerably due to heavy sand fill. The Virgin river is FINALLY looking like it's trending toward decreasing. There MIGHT be a chance for Mystery for you guys. We shall see...

Yeah, doing the daily check on the flow rates! :haha: Can't wait for this trip! We'll arrive on Thursday afternoon some time (depends how many stops I make on the way from Vegas - buying groceries, cooler, beer, wine, beer, beer, wine, groceries, jetboil canisters, new cell phone, beer...) but we'll almost certainly be in time for dinner. Location?

I'd like to have a few more folks along for Keyhole on Sat. There will be 3 - 4 of us (depending on whether my daughter's boyfriend comes along). I have a permit for 12 but will change it down depending on interest.

I think a potluck sounds great for sat.
I already thought about bringin a Chinese Chicken Salad to share.

Bummer Alison that your friend can't make it - she's gonna be missing out on a good time - it'll be super fun to hang out again, and hopefully do a canyon or hike together.

Friday, if Subway is more back to normal I'll do that with Robin and Aaron (I snagged the last 3 slots they had for preservation for it). But if it is still in high flow conditions I'll offer that permit up to other more experienced folks and gladly join the Keyhole/Birch trip. I'd love to hit Mystery if that pans out, but I'm good for whatever. Kinda will want to see how Robin's feeling and what other options might be available for hiking if she's had her fill of canyons.

Meet at the campground on Thursday? Or at a food & drink place? What time?

You still have openings for Keyhole? I haven't done that one but it sounds easy. Think I could get E through there without hampering your fun...?

It's an easy canyon - and pretty darn short but the water is cold so a wet suit is definitely needed! And neo socks! And neo gloves for the little guy would be good too!

We're gonna be getting in pretty late on Fri. and might sleep in a bit on Sat. Like we won't be popping out of bed at 6AM raring to go..it'll probably be more like stirring at 7 - up by 8 - know what I mean?

I hope to do a keyhole descent and then maybe a hike up to Hidden Canyon or some other half day thing...

Yeah, I was unclear, I was talking to whoever is going I guess. I'll have to talk to him about it. Can I rent a kids wetsuit & stuff somewhere?

I plan on leaving at 5 am-ish on Thursday, putting me into Zion early afternoon. It may be just me and my little dude. My friends will either be following along or meeting there at some point that day. The husband is very likely to not get out of work:fitz:-don't get me started.:roll::angryfire: And my oldest son may have to work that weekend as well because he just got his first job. If they don't schedule him, then he will be with me. :mrgreen:

I'm down for anything. Spontaneity always works well in my book.

Sarah and I will have our mountain bikes and are coming down Wed night. So see ya all when you get there. And we are up for anything... ya know where ever the wind blows us. I just want to chill and relax and roast some hot dogs and marshmellows.

I will bring lemon cookies to the potluck and probably something else as well.

We were thinking of going as a family down to Bryce next weekend, but maybe would change our plans to go to Zion instead.

Anyone planning stuff for really young kids? I've got an 18-month-old and a 4-year-old. The 4-year-old probably would be happy just riding the shuttle the entire time and then getting out and running around like a crazy person.

I was thinking Icebox, but I don't know if my 18-month old could handle the hanging belay station on the first rap ;)

I'd do Angels Landing, but I'm 100% positive that my 4-year old would get himself killed on that trek. Any other ideas?

Still pondering what to bring/make for the pot luck. It's hard when flying. I have a burner that fits on a propane tank I'll bring and I can use the grills in camp. Maybe a dry-rub on a tri-tip and cook up some onions and peppers for a fajitas? Can someone local bring lighter fluid? Either that or take what I don't use off my hands. If local folks throw in an extra camp chair that would be cool too.

I am going to do pulled pork for the potluck with rice and lemon cookies. If you guys want bananna boats bring a bananna. I will bring chocolate and marshemellows and will make them for you! or at least show ya how. There are nummy!!!! Kev I will bring bananna for you as b-day present.
