People are dying that have COVID-19 but most of them didn't die from COViD-19, most of them are dying of something else. COVID is detected along with a huge list of other things like heart disease, pneumonia, flu.

Yes COVID is an infectious virus, but it is not the main killer in most of these cases.

But just sit tight, enjoy the show, all will be known in a couple of weeks. There is a reason.

Either these fools are just completely stupid, or they are already looking at that Porkulous bill and taking full advantage of it. Someone needs to tell them that in the middle of a crisis, with millions of people suddenly unemployed, workers have absolutely zero leverage on their employer. If they walk out, the employer can just fire them, and then pick from a long list of willing people that will take their place tomorrow. Or, they are eyeing that pork bill, and seeing that in the short term, they can make more money off of being unemployed than they can by working, so they figure they have nothing to lose.

There is a theory that TV, internet and phones will go down for a few days before then.

The main message through all of this, is it's all good. Some very good things are coming, but some drastic things had to happen to wake everybody up.

Crazy stuff though, staying skeptical, but informed.

How can anyone, beyond speculation claim one country has more than another or moreso--more than china's number of cases?

If all forms of mass media went down for 2-3 days straight you would see looting and rioting in the streets. Seriously. It would be mass chaos. Criminals would know that they have a brief window of opportunity, and would act accordingly.

Most likely they were never put into use. If they follow protocol like we do in the labs here in the US. You have to validate the new test against the old method or gold standard before you start using the test. You would take several known positive samples and several known negative samples and run them side by side on both testing platforms and compare the results. However if they were using them before validating the tests they were telling patients that were positive that they were negative and off they went to infect more people.

The tests in question came from a company called Shenzhen Bioeasy Technology, and were found to have 30-35% probability of detecting a true positive test.

This is one of the reasons, we can't just start willy nilly testing people in house once we get a test kit that will test for SARS-CoV2 we have to validate the test method first. Make sure the test does what it says it will.

What could make a test fail to catch a positive? If the specimen is not collected correctly , not transported correctly, not tested in a timely manner, or the test is just shitty.

In digging a bit further this particular test you dip a swab of the patient's saliva into an extraction fluid, if the virus is present it would cause a color change. Inherently this test is going to be less sensitive or specific than RT-PCR methods. I would say it is more of a screening test. Easy way to catch some positive patients but a backup method would be needed for any negative test result. We do this with rapid strep tests. A positive strep is considered positive, if the test comes up negative we send it to micro to be plated and checked manually.

There is a specific reason for the communications outage, it will be more necessary in the areas of higher concentration of certain people. Some parts of the country just might be exempt. But imagine if the nation were to perform a sudden sweep of mass arrests, how would they keep the criminals from warning the others to run. That would be the primary purpose of the outtage.

Maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't. I'm willing to wait and see with an open mind, and I'll be the first to call BS if it doesn't happen.

So the US waiting to develop our own tests that have a high accuracy percentage as opposed to using WHO tests that likely were sourced in china was our only real, logical move.

The cry for expediency up front by healthcare providers was reasonable considering what was before them.

Now that we are 3 weeks down the road and have multiple styles of kits coming on, our accuracy and latency problems should drastically be reduced.

Yes and No

First not all foreign kits would be faulty. But again any test you bring on in a lab should be validated to prove it works like it says it does.

What happened in the US is that typically a new disease like this would be sent for testing to a State Lab not your hospital lab and in the beginning not a reference lab. Which in a fast moving pandemic is not enough to contain the disease as we have witnessed with how quickly it spread in the US.

The CDC received the primer sequence from China and sent out kits as soon as they could to the State Labs, but there was an issue with one of the reagents in the test kit sent by our own CDC. This really hampered testing. I don't know what reagent it is, just what I have read. But having worked with PCR... good grief there is a lot that can go wrong. So having a CDC test that fails is no better than one that can only catch a positive result 35% of the time.

We use tests manufactured from all over the world. So not using one from China is not really a logical move as long as you can prove it is a good test through validation and verification. But how do you do this with an emerging disease? You have to have known positives. The CDC not choosing to use an already developed test isn't really a bad point or a good point in my opinion. I think it is one area that needs to be looked at for future outbreaks.

Anyway the CDC chose to develop their own. They also discouraged labs from developing their own in house test which some place are more than capable of doing once they have the correct primer sequence. But there is still a bunch of hoops you have to jump through to use an in house developed test. So in my opinion the CDC failed pretty hard on this point as well. And again should be looked at for future outbreaks.

With our current system any new test has to be FDA approved, follow CLIA guidelines and yadda yadda yadda... that can take at best months to get but more like over a year. Granting several companies Emergency Use Authorization was exactly what they needed to do. CDC scores a point here. But it is good we have all these guidelines in place because if we didn't we wouldn't have reliable testing.


As soon as each lab can validate and verify these new test, they will bust their butts to get as much testing done as they can. We just have to be able to keep the tests kits in house and then we can start to catch up.

The sad thing is this article only talks about the doctors and nurses.. but it is effecting anyone that works at the hospital. They might not get a pay cut but they do get their hours cut.

Is this outage going to include credit card charges? Will I be able to buy anything at the store with my CC, or will they go cash only during the blackout? I can't remember the last time i actually made a cash in hand transaction. I hardly carry any cash around, with CC machines being so ubiquitous - even CC readers that connect to mobile phones.

In slightly stressing over what things I may need as society continues to spiral downhill at an alarming rate, the thought of lack of cash came to my mind a couple of weeks ago, and I asked my wife if we shouldn't go to the bank and take out a good wad of cash in small bills for emergencies. I think this may have been right after the Magna earthquake. Glad to know that my inspiration insight may at least have some good conspiracy theory logic backing it up. :2thumbs:
