And no sand flats road tweekers hangning around.
Sand Flats has more 'general' traffic, mainly because it's now paved all the way up nearly to the Porcupine Trailhead. There are a crapload of campsites. Yes, you have to pay but the last camp near the top is fairly new...ten miles out of town but quiet(I've camped there once) Campsite at the lower elevation are hotter and closer near the top are breezy and cool. The cliff camps are fairly well protected and cool down at night.
Kane Creek Road is much longer and all dirt but you can usually find a place to pull out. The first few miles along the river you end up paying no matter where you pull out & It gets dusty the more traffic it gets & you need a 4wd to cross the creek at times. Cars won't make it past the creek. Lots and lots of places to pull out and set up camp but very few 'marked' paysites past the canyon. It gets windy down the valley once it heads south.
Another area is up river in the Big Bend area. Honestly, Fourtycal and I have camped nearly everywhere down there for the last 15+ years and we tend to head up Sand Flats road most the time simple because of it's proximity to town - I don't really care where we camp. We've even camped down the potash road on several occasions...all the way from the first pull outs to Wall St. and up to the Poison Spider trailhead.
We've looked at the Bull Canyon area below Gemini Bridges but you can't really camp up there anymore. Any camps up on the LaSals are cool but take a while to get to.
.....this is probably information overload(sorry) but pick something easy for everyone to find
It would be cool if someone was in the area before our trip and could scope out a place. Then post pics and coords. :2thumbs:
Hell with the firewood. We ought to bring a trailer full of pallets and some gasoline. :ahhh:
I always bring some wood. You'll never find any down there. I always bring waterjugs.......you can fill 'em up at the artesian well at the base of the cliff near the junction to Moab. I also rattle on and on and on..... :haha:Quote:

There is also, of course, out a bit further along the behind the rocks trail as it opens up to a huge flat area, great for open camping & Huge Loud Ho- Downs :2thumbs: let me know if I can help in any way as I would be only too happy
Acca.... I like your style.
Oh yeah, there is also some new campsites just finished out Kane Creek Road, set up for tents, but they are awfully open to the hot sun, just ah'....at the start near the Moab rim trail or thereabouts, no trees at all. :ne_nau:
May sucks for me :ne_nau:
Is May a must do time? there's the end of April as well but we'd have to do at least a week after Jeep Safari (easter week) - that is an insane time to go!
Here is a link to the Sand Flats area:
http://www.utah.com/playgrounds/sand_flats.htm
and a calendar of events :
http://www.moabutah.explorefourcorners.com/events.html
BTW, the Moab Arts Festival is May 24th - 26th - very cool indeed :2thumbs:
I wasn't planning on being in charge or anything but IF I were I would choose this.
If I can get my time off with days off or vacation days then I can go down early and find some sites. They are on a first come first serve basis - no reservations - but there are a lot of 'em and I can even find campsites during Safari week :ne_nau: There are just too many people AND extra law enforcement there...read: no loud parties. ANY other time works & the local enforcement doesnt usually bother you.
Dude we need loud parties :haha:
Dang! I leave this thread for a few days and it takes off!! So we thinking weekend of May 1 or 22 or 29? IMO- I'd rather not go on a weekend that has something huge going on. End of April is out for me b/c I have a performance with my art center. So let's pin a date!
Edit: Oops ok so Memorial Day is the weekend of 22nd which is also the Art Festival which would be cool to go to. But I don't know how into the Memorial Day crowd I am into? Just me being OVERLY particular. :lol8:
May 1???Quote:

Count me in for anytime.
If we're talking May then I'm good the weekend of May 1 or May 29 :haha:Quote:

Ok. I am putting up (for a vote or not...moderators' perogative) the dates of May 1,2,3. If anyone wants to add a day on before or after they can but hopefully this will work. I will put in for these days when I get back to work on Monday. I will be there one way or another
oh...and I will be you guide if you will have me
I am in! I could head down Thursday after work and stay until Sunday.
Cool! I just asked Alison to spearhead keeping this info up so everyone can get to it.Quote:

Didn't mean to blow over this. The Arts Festival is in the big park somewhere around the center of town and is just a big getogether of artsy booths - people selling their wares. Not near as big as the Park City arts fest but the same idea...on a moaby shinyhappyhippie level. Lots of food & games & stuff too.Quote:

Lightweight tenting will work the best unless someone wants to bring their Wall tent or something. I will be pulling my biketrailer too. It holds around 9 - 10 bikes. Someone bring a nice boombox(mine sucks) - maybe a generator...who knows. I'll have extra coolers & waterjugs......
...I'm just thinking out loud people
Count me in. I'll be there the weekend before this for the April car show and the week after for the classic Bronco safari, heck I might as well mover there :haha:
This camp sounds like a good time, I'm in for Mountainbiking, Jeeping, dirtbiking/atv if anyone else is, a canyon if possible and whatever else :2thumbs:
I'm more than likely driving my Jeep & biketrailer. My Dodge is getting old & is being saved for hauling my camptrailer - I'll more than likely be coming down alone so I dont 'need' a trailer :haha: I like to rough it! eclipsee_steering :ride: :rockit: :kickit:
Rough'n it! NO TV!!! :nono: Radio's are a dam good thing.Quote:

I am soooo excited!!!
I just checked the old event calendar and it looks like either weekend could be made to work for me after all. I'll have to see how things look after the Skinny Tire Festival before I commit though.
And BTW, I'll probably opt for the quiet side of camp for a little bit of personal desert solitaire away from all the fumes.
REAL MEN DON'T NEED MOTORS! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3080/...14ec43b4_o.gif
Hmmm. I hit southern Utah on April 25, and fly back out of Vegas on May 3. But my plan was for all canyons all the time.
Might be able to make this work - not sure yet.
Anyone wanna do some canyons on, say Thursday & Friday (North Wash, anyone?) and hit Moab Friday evening? I'd have to leave town around 3:30AM Sunday. :eek2:
There's some action going on in the Canyoneering section regarding a noobfest........any thoughts on making this weekend a canyon weekend in Moab?

I'm all for doing an allaround get together canyons/biking/motorbike/etc. The weekend of the 1st,2nd,3rd of May still seems to work the best.Quote:

If things work out between now and then, I'll be driving my new used car down. :2thumbs: And BTW, I tend to pack light much lighter than this. One bike, one tent, a small kitchen kit centered around a coleman two burner, a good book, no TV, and very few tunes.Quote:

I can easily arrange to arrive on Thursday afternoon but somebody will have to tell me where to go and give me an idea of how much space to try and occupy. Kens Lake, Dubinky Wells, Hunter Canyon, somewhere else? Alison?
If the 1st weekend works, I can do this. I'll have a rental Cherokee (or similar model) with two big duffel bags of stuff. Mountaineering tent, tarp, minimal camping supplies, beer and wine, and a bunch of canyoneering stuff. Ready for anything! :2thumbs:
Hey, didj'all hear that Matrimony Springs has been closed because of high coliform counts? A shame.
Cirrus- beer wine? Count me in. :lol8:
BIG FAT BUMP.................WE STILL ON EVERYONE?
