waltny that is a cool shot, what are the settings on that pic?
Alex, what I will say is that with these shots the apature-shutter relationship became crystal clear. As I played in manual mode and messed with the stops(my lousy P&S only goes 2.8-8.0) and hanging the shutter I was able to get the camera to see close to what I was seeing(Im at the mercy of the camera for exposure compension when I do this). I would say I was at F5.6, 1/180 ISO 80 to get both of these. With that in mind, I took about 50 shots that night and these are the best 2....
1/25 isn't too bad of a ratio :lol8: Mine usually turn out 1/100 if not worse.
You should be getting a better ratio than that with the D40, we should get together for a shoot some day.....
Anyhow here is one shot from just above the capital building in SLC last night. I missed the downward slanting rays by about 10 secs as I was setting up my tripod.... Not sure if this is the best, but :ne_nau: if its not.

A rare wintertime sunset from the driveway of my home
I'm new posting to this forum. Here's a couple shots of a beautiful summer sunset in Orem, UT. Plus one in the winter looking at Cascade mountain - near Provo, UT.

Not from a digital camera, so it's kind of grainy.
Great Western Trail near Layton, UT - overlooking Hill AFB to the west.
I can see the Hill runways in the forground. What zoom lens were you using to capture this shot? Ive wished many times I could be up there taking shots of the beautiful sunsets but time and responsibilities are not on my side.
I took that with my D80 using the 18-200mm VR lens at 150mm zoom. It was a challenge just to hold the camera steady enough to keep it reasonably sharp. I really wish I had brought a tripod...
I really like the shots you've submitted by the way...great work!

Nice one Tim.
Can I play? The Army moved me to Texas, so I only have Texas sunsets... here's one:
