I know it's already too late for this trip, but I still wanted to suggest Kolob Reservoir for a future trip. I camped up there last weekend and though the wind was a bit much we still had an amazing time. Its a bit further than 45min but not by much, and the drive up is spectacular. It's by far the best camping I've found in the area (so far) and who can argue with free camping that is right on the water? Anyway, hope you had a great time wherever you ended up!

We ended up going to Red Cliffs. Had a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
Its off of Kolob Terrace road (so yes it is by Zion, but not the main canyon) you would turn off on a dirt road right before the Hop Valley trailhead. I was there today it was nice!
