Toquerville - Going the wrong way!! Please Read

Unfortunately, the tax base here is primarily on the oil, gas, and mining industry...at least if we HAD more businesses like a WalMart or a...(fill in store preference here) the taxes would be evened out more and not put so much on the shoulders of the home owners. We as a chamber of commerce are trying desperately to get more tourism in the area in many different ways. We have something going on nearly every weekend...some rodeo or car show or concert series or raceway event or something and as soon as things start to take off and grow we discover that if we'd just HAD more facilities LIKE another hotel/restaurant/shopping area, we'd have gotten ( fill in the event/business/boost in economy). :ne_nau:

They are promising so much it almost sounds like an internet scam. Are you sure there isn't a deposed dictator involved?

When I was younger and working, I certainly favored growth in out city. As soon as I retired, I moved away from the traffic and constant growth to a small town. When it grew too quickly for me, I left there, too. However, I'm back in a large city and no hope of going to a small town again.

To sum up, being retired makes me favor "no growth". Trying to earn a living, I would definitely favor "growth". So, I can see both sides of this one.

Wow that Heritage USA stuff is eerie!! Kinda like that movie I Am Legend...I almost expected to see zombies stumbling out of those cabins!

Acca, that's all together possible. There are definitely some people that fit the bill. I would have been perfect 30 years ago.

This complex plans to build housing for their labor force. They will need 5000 people to run it. They will have their own police/security and will offer it to other communities for back up.

One of the problems here is that we don't really attract retirees. We don't have golf and that's what they come to the St George area for. There really has been talk of opening up the main street area to businesses and I'm all for it. In fact, I would possibly open one, myself.

For those that haven't lived elsewhere let me tell you about property taxes. We had a 1400 sq ft townhouse in NJ. There were 450 units! When we moved our taxes were $4800.00!

Here we have a 3200 sq ft home, 3/4 acre and our taxes are $1900.00. Of course, they went from $1500.00 to $1900.00 in three years.

I'm familiar with NJ taxes, having moved there in 1976 when the Income Tax passed as a way of reducing Property Tax. You know what happened, of course.

Around 2000, I think, my wofe and I were returning from a motor home trip up north. In SC, we started looking for a campground to stay the night. We found a nice place at some religious park called Heritage something or other. There was practically no one there, which puzzled us. Never knew until today who had developed that place or what happened to it. :lol8:

The city council was to vote last evening but it was taken off the agenda. My wife and many others worked very hard to let people in T-ville know what was coming. The town asked that letters be sent pro or con and sounds like there were a lot more con.

The proposal was removed at the request of OWF and can't be reinstated unless they go to the planning board first. This will take a lot of time, thankfully.

Makes me wonder why they went to T-ville. I'm very sure they're just shopping around. Vegas sounds like a much better fit for what they have planned. 750ft tall ferris wheel. Nobody would even blink at something like that in Vegas. They probably can't get the tax incentives and "free" land they're hoping for in Vegas. Either that or they don't want to be over run by homies from the ghetto. :ne_nau:
