Hite
maybe on the other side, just after the turnout for the view area.
Nope, not Hite.
Hint--the woman on the left is my mother, who will be 83 on Monday and the woman on the right is her mother.
Sorry Kurt, more than 50 miles from Hite.
Nuther clue--the sandstone in the background is all Navajo.
My guess is that it's somewhere in Glen Canyon, pre-Lake Powell. Would it be somewhere around Crossing of the Fathers or the turnoff to Rainbow Bridge (i.e. Forbidding Canyon)?
Paiute Farms area on the San Juan.
Correct Scott P , at least the first part.
I'm pretty sure this is the actual Crossing of the Fathers or at least was taken very close by.
I have been digitizing my parent's slides of when they were living in Glen Canyon City (Bigwater now) in the early 60's and came across a bunch of fascinating pics like these. Here are a few more of the area:
Here is a wider view of the same spot. As near as I can tell, the bluffs in the distance are the gravel bars in Padre Bay. Gunsight Butte on the right.

This should be easy. I hope no one asks for another clue. Almost everyone knows the background, but where is the photo taken from?
