"Falling Man" petroglyph at Whitney Pockets of Nevada's Gold Butte
We spent the day exploring the Whitney Pockets area of Gold Butte. What a great place to hike and explore.
We first went and found the historic dam and ruins from the 1933 CCC effort. I'm still not sure what prompted the need for the dam, but it's pretty cool. Following that we went to the trailhead for Whitney Pockets. We scrambled all over the hills looking for petroglyph and pictographs. To my knowledge there is only 2 small pictographs under one of the alcoves. The petroglyphs however, are plentiful. We especially loved Newspaper Rock and the Falling Man.
After the hike, we opted to take the backroads over the mountain to St George. We started in Nevada, drove through the Arizona Strip and ended up in Utah. While in the Arizona Strip we came upon the Forest Fire and to our surprise, it was still burning/smoldering. Upon reaching the main road we found the fire fighters taking a break, I'm sure they were happy for the rain.
Here's a few photos.
