LAS VEGAS — The 456-foot-tall Kingda Ka could soon move into second place as the tallest roller coaster in the world, and a proposed rollercoaster in Vegas, measuring 650 feet, would take its place.
My Dad was 13 yrs older than my Mom and older than most of my friends' dads, but he was totally cool! He was only 17 when this photo was taken after he had just enlisted in the Navy in 1941 where he spent the next 4 yrs in the Pacific theater on a submarine.

The swell does seem like dinosaur country...cool!

--

EMERY COUNTY — A vacation in the San Rafael Desert turned into a major historic discovery when a family unearthed a dinosaur.

A Utah family and their friends were enjoying their vacation in the San Rafael Desert over the weekend when they made the discovery. Amanda Watt said the annual trip is part of a longtime family tradition her father-in-law started.

"He would bring his kids out for rock-hounding adventures," Watt said.

Emery County is known for the variety of dinosaur bones and fossil fragments and the group were digging to find something. They expected to find simple bone fragments, but instead they unearthed several full dinosaur vertebrae and smooth black bones.

"I thought it was pretty cool," said Donovan Dunn.

Watt said her nephew ran over to the group with the news that he had found something big in the dirt.

"It was just like, 'Oh!' and everybody was ecstastic and couldn't believe what was there," Watt said.

The family alerted state paleontologists so they could safely excavate the bones.

"It's also an articulated skeleton," said paleontologist James Kirkland. "That means all the bones are joined together. You can see the backbone just laid out on this animal."

Kirkland said the group did the right thing by alerting specialists to do the actual digging instead of trying to do it themselves. He said that any further exposure could have damaged the bones.

"They exposed bones, but they didn't pick anything up," he said.

Kirkland and other paleontologists believe that the discovery was made on BLM land, and he is trying to arrange for the family to go back to help unearth the discovery.

Just came back from 1st trip to the Escalante area, and that's some wild/beautiful country, and I got some fantastic photographs!! - I normally hike/explore alone, and found that my navigation skills have been long forgotten.. As an old Army Ranger, I knew it well, but never using it since the 60's, and with all the handheld GPS units that we didn't have back then, I think I need to Re-Learn a process that I used to know so well.. I checked with our local college, but nothing until next October and I don't want to wait that long. What I want to know is how to use a GPS unit and compass with a Topo. Is there a better/best book or manual I can begin with? - The only compass I've ever used was the Military Lensatic ones, so can anyone recommend a specific compass to get? - I have, and know how to use a handheld GPS, but I just don't think that's enough without other updated skills in addition. What's new out there since the 60's ???

I was looking for advice about shirts for summer heat hiking. I know at other cooler times it's best to wear man-made fibres that dry quickly and breathe if you get sweaty or have to go through water so that you don't lose heat and get cold from a wet shirt. And cotton isn't good.
But when it's really hot, is cotton better? Some of those man-made fibres seem to get hotter than cotton, they are also closer-ftting rather than baggy, and having a wet sweaty shirt might not be such a bad thing in the heat.
So what do you recommend as best for August please? Thanks

After a very nice hike this past weekend, a couple of friends pulled some beers from their cooler and downed them while we chatted and rehydrated. I'm a beer drinker, a former home-brewer, and have nothing against a cold beer after a hike. (Honestly, is there a better time to have a cold one??)

The name of their beer was: Bud Light & Clamato Chelada

Now, I've never had this drink, but I'd like to consider myself an open-minded person. The concotion sparked my curiosity. So I looked up some reviews on this beverage before investing in a can of my own.

For your entertainment, I will share a few:

"The carbonation acts like a small burst of napalm spreading terrible all over you tongue."

"If I go to hell when I die, this will surely be the only beverage available to me to quench a fire-and-brimstone-fueled thirst."

"Buy this only if you are obsessed with putting ketchup in your cereal."

"It smells like rubber balloons, fruit punch, cantaloupe and sweaty men."

"The flavor is super salty, intense, really sweet and salty tomato somehow makes it so much worse, like spraying air freshener after a troubling bathroom incident it actually all combines terrible ingredients into something unspeakable."

"The nose is a gag reflex trigger, salty, fishy, composty... This is one of the worst tasting things I've ever put in my mouth, and I've eaten batteries, dog food, and unhealthy women..."

:lol8:

If you are like me, when you are not in the outdoors hiking canyons, or climbing mountains, you are reading about it. When I was at the Salt Lake City library I happened to run across a thick book titled, Grand Obsession: Harvey Butchart and the exploration of Grand Canyon by authors, Butler and Myers.

It is part biography and part adventure story. Harvey Butchart pioneered many new rim-to-rim routes in the Grand Canyon when the canyon was not as popular as it is today. He started to explore the canyon in the 1940’s and continued into the mid 1980’s until he could no longer endure the physical challenges of hiking the canyon due to
advanced age.

Grand Obsession is well written and reads more like an adventure story than a dry biography. If you’re interested in learning more about a great explorer and what it was like to hike the Grand Canyon in the early days, then you should take a look at this book.
