These look like redband rainbow trout and are wild and reproducing. Very unexpected here in the desert. A few, including this one, had the most remarkable parr markings. Fish up to 16" in a stream about 8 feet wide was pretty incredible, especially since they don't get much pressure and attacked anything dark and dry. They also were vicious with fast stripped buggers. Awesome welcome to Utah for me.}

After my formalities had concluded, I stopped in for a few casts and within three casts, had a big sucker on the line, literally.

Today, pre-set plans for both days of the weekend meant that any fishing would have to be carried out locally. Deer Creek fit the bill, so I set off in hopes that the perch or bass might be in close to shore.

Other people I saw coming back to their cars hadn't reported any luck, so I was a little bit nervous about my choice.

Getting to my first spot, signs of life were limited to a marmot on the rocks, but I thought I'd try my luck anyway.

After quite a bit of fruitless casting, I finally got some action about an hour into my stay. Four small rainbows came in pretty quickly, using a marabou jig and a rainbow Blue Fox. They all looked pretty much like this:

Only finding the small rainbows in that area, I figured a move was in order, so I took a bit of a walk and settled into a little area that looked inviting.

My impression was that it would be a long day and that I might just have to accept what I'd already caught, but then a large cloud blocked out the direct sunlight and my next cast yielded a good brown!

Previously, I had only caught browns from Deer Creek once and that was on my birthday back in December. Two came to hand that day, one right after the other.

Well, following that same pattern, my next cast brought in yet another fine Deer Creek brown.

The clouds moved away for a bit and the sun was shining brightly again. That also meant the bite vanished.

While casting away, I noticed the latest and greatest watersports craze, "Flyboarding".

It actually looks pretty cool. They can supposedly launch people as high as 40 feet. Neat-O.

Eventually the clouds came back and what else? More browns! A couple of hard tugging bad boys shook off before I met them, but there were still a few that made it in. It may not have been expected, but it was certainly welcome!

The day went from a big question mark to a big exclamation point and all that needed to happen was for some clouds to move in. Crazy how that works sometimes. There may not have been a lot of fish, but my time spent was rewarded with a valuable lesson in the workings of the enigmatic Deer Creek browns.

I'll have to test this method again in the future and see what happens. For now, I'll just bid a big thanks to Deer Creek for what I would call an excellent day on the water, especially in the short time I had.

Recently transplanted from Kentucky via Wyoming. Living in the south-western part of the state. Rockville to be exact. I work for the NPS at Zion (NOT ZIONS), so there's me outing myself.

Anyway, I have been pleasantly surprised at the number and quality of fish in the region. I thought moving to the Dixie from Wyoming would slow down my fishing. As we drove by Strawberry, someone must have flipped on the tractor beam because we felt ourselves being pulled toward the dam.

Surprisingly, there was only one vehicle in the free parking (the pay area was loaded) and we went down to test our luck.

On my second cast, I hooked up with a nice cutthroat.

After that, it was rainbow city. Small planters were all over the place, right on top. Most of the cutts were down about 10-20 feet. The next few hours were spent unhooking fish.

The fishing was good!

We caught a ton of rainbows with a cutt thrown in the mix on occasion. The action was so good that the rainbows because somewhat tedious to deal with. It's a good problem to have.

A big beaver also paid us a visit and made sure to swat his tail on the water a few times. It must have spooked the fish a bit too, since our action slowed down quite a bit.

Pretty soon, we decided to check on the river, which is always a good plan.

Right away, we were getting follows and hits, although I was having trouble setting the hook.

Here's one my accomplice scored on the fly:

He got several more, while I kept whiffing, but ultimately wrangled in a few. It's such a great river.

That one had some really good color.

Got my first brookie of the year too.

Another brown from an awesome beaver pond came in and that was it for the river.

This beaver pond is a bit bigger than the last time I saw it. Nice!

As we were leaving, we saw a spot that looked like a good place to fish on the lake again, so we pulled over and caught a few more fish before calling it a day.

It was a really good day. The fishing was pretty good, though the missed hook sets were pretty frustrating. Who knows how nice some of those fish were? Oh well. That's what keeps us fishing, right?

A fellow forum member (J) and I had noticed each others' similarities in fishing interests and decided it would be fun to get out for an all-day adventure on Saturday.

At first, a destination was hard to come up with, since both of us were willing to go pretty much anywhere. Many areas were considered and, ultimately, we agreed to fish a river that neither of us had spent much time on.

We met up at his house in the early morning and set off on a long drive. The main target of our trip was to fish a section of a river that I personally had never visited, then hit a tail water section later, if the action wasn't as good as we hoped.

We arrived to frosty fence posts at the access point and observed that the river was a bit murky. Being our primary destination though, we felt that giving it a try would be worthwhile, considering the river's reputation and host of available species.

Our initial efforts seemed hopeless as we worked our way upstream, but a glimmer of hope shined as J picked up the first fish of the day.

It didn't take too much longer and I had found my own skunk breaker:

It seemed as though the fishing improved as we got farther away from the access point, but over the course of a few hours, our catch rates weren't what we came for. Recent weather had left the water clarity in bad shape for flies/lures.

It was still a really cool place to explore and take note of the very fishy looking holes throughout its bends. We also managed to pick up a fish on occasion, so it wasn't time wasted.

When the fish hit, they were pretty aggressive. This guy actually came rocketing out of the water to grab my Rapala after I'd pulled it up at the end of my retrieve. That was a fun surprise and it made me jump.

It was a really neat canyon to visit and it was easy to see why so many people hold it in such high regard.

We decided to leave and try another section that promised better water clarity and, hopefully, faster fishing. The canyon was incredible!

What a scenic place! In the past, I had pulled over a couple of times to fish this section, but my family was in the car waiting for me and there really wasn't much time to give it a fair chance. Today would be different.

We bypassed the first few access points and put in at a spot with some large pools that were visible from the road.

The water was a lot better looking and great holes were everywhere, although we had a really hard time finding any fish at first. There were a lot of man-made structures in place, I assume to provide improved fish habitat, but they seemed deserted.

Clinging to the hopes that we were just too close to the access point again, we carried on upstream and I was finally able to break silence with a beautiful cheeky cutthroat.

We worried that the fish would be few and far between, but just around the next bend, we were pleased to smack a couple of good browns at the same time from the same hole.

From there on out, it was lights-out! The fish were ready and willing with open mouths. We worked each stretch cooperatively and both of us caught a lot.
