OK, a little too graphic, but a serious mountain biking topic. :eek2:

So I was rid- I mean my friend was riding and this is what he told me.

I was riding Snowbasin's Coldwater Canyon trail last week and pushing it pretty hard. I was focused on not stopping at all. As I got within @ 200 yds from the top, I noticed a pain down yonder. As I'm still peddling, I reach down and to my shock it was all numb down there. :scared:

I immediately got off my bike and had to double check if it was just my gloves or if it was really completely numb down there. It was, so I decided to walk the bike for a bit. It wore off after about 5 minutes.

I wasn't sure if pain was going to come surging back or not, luckily it didn't. But anyways, this had me concerned.

I'm assuming a better seat would help, one with the split down the middle. For those of you who know me, I'm not one to spend more than $100 on my old bike, so what's a good decently priced seat that will solve this problem.

...or, is this likely to happen often? I've been riding almost every week and this is the first time it's happened. --but, I usually take more breaks on the climb too, this time I was just pushing it. (I promise I would have made it all the way without stopping if this wouldn't have happened. :haha: )

Once again we hit the trail that NEVER disappoints :cool2:

I ventured out with Mark X2 and we parked at the lower Snowbasin parking lot. So here we are thinking we're going to get off the trail earlier than normal because we leave my house at 4:40 pm. We finally ride at 5:45, get up there about 6:15, and we're down to Wheeler at 7:30 just as it's getting dark. I never estimate it to take that long. Of course I got a rear flat (slime to the rescue) and so did Mark M by the time we reached the car.

We always do the shuttle on this one, and I couldn't imagine how late we'd be if we didn't.

If we're really short on time, we'll just go up and back on Coldwater, usually in about an hour if we don't mess around.

Oh, and we saw Gene down at the bottom of Wheeler.

Here's a video from facebook (they don't block my copyrighted soundtrack :haha: ) With 2 cameras rolling the whole time, I struggled to get it down to 4 minutes on this thing, so you'd better watch it all.

This isn't an "official" invite, lest I back out again, but we're planning on hitting the Northern section of the Ogden Shoreline Trail tomorrow, Wednesday. Either that or Snowbasin, but the latter may still be wet from all of this rain.

No commitments yet, just planning to ride sometime.

Thursday aug. 26 2010

So this is a lesson to be prepared. I was planning on going to lewis peak, and being back in about 3 1/2 hours. I filled my big camelback(100 oz) and headed out. The plan was to get to the peak fast and take it easy on the way down. The first part worked(well "fast" is a relative term) I started heading down and about 1/2 mile from the peak the rear tire was getting low. Damn! I quickly unhitched my wheel and started looking. Found a goathead. I dropped my pack and started reaching for the extra tube. Doh! The tube was missing. :nono: So I got the patch kit out and patched it up. I grabbed my pump and realized it had a part missing. I fought with the pump and managed to get the tire inflated. Now to get back to the truck. My water ran out about 15 minutes before the end. No big deal. Everything was going fine until just after the watershed sign, I pinchflated! &^%$#&^%#$!!!!!!!!! With no extra tube I tried to patch the snakebite with no luck. So now theres about 3 miles to hike down, with no water. Have you ever hiked 3 miles in cycling shoes? I wouldn't recommend it. So I didn't make it back in 3 1/2 hrs, it was more like 5 hrs. The last 1.5 hrs were without water. When I got back to the truck I actually had salt stains around my mouth. I also missed a friends birthday dinner. I took some pics on the way up. I also have the gps track, but google maps must have a limit as to how long(or # of points) because the track got cut off.

So Mark M finally convinced me to do a race with him, and then I convinced Mark B to head up with me for the last of the Wednesday night races at Snowbasin.

I've been refusing the last few years because I hate climbing and I'm not fond of being slower than girls.

But it was pretty fun. I just joined the beginner class, planned on starting at the back and taking the trail for the first time. It was on the climb that I actually started to pass people (3 of them)

...ok one guy had his bike upside down changing a flat but that still counts.

There's a small rocky downhill switchback section in the middle of the climb that I came off the bike on but I recovered pretty good.

So I've passed 3 people on the climb (which is amazing) and I'm starting to feel like I can gain some ground now, because I can hold my own on the downhill. Right at about the crest of the uphill, my chain snaps.

And I didn't have my gear because I'm just planning on a 45 minute ride, nothing to drink, no tools, nothing. So I had to just cruise back down a dirt road with the chain around my shoulders.

But I still enjoyed myself, I'm looking forward to next season. And I won a shirt in the raffle.

Oh, and the girl ended up beating me because I took myself out of the race.

It is a tough trail soft with alot of roots/sticks.
The views from the top are awesome looking back toward pineview dam/Middle fork.
You can also start this trail from the saddle about 2/3 of the way to the Cold water overlook, but it does not wrap around Sardine peak yet.
The Forest service guys we talked to that are building the trail said it should be done in a week or so but it will be a while before it is packed down.
The first picture is where the lower part of the trail starts.

Has anyone done any riding in the Phoenix/Flagstaff area? I am going there in a week or so and am trying to find some trails to ride in both places. I'll be riding a 4" XC bike and would like to find some intermediate/advanced trails. So far I've found the National trail in Phoenix, and the Schultz trail in Flagstaff. Any other trails you recommend or places to see? Thanks in advance for your help.
