Capitol Reef National Park (UT)
Canyoneer Rescued From Pandora's Box

On Monday, September 6th, rangers rescued a canyoneer who was unable to complete his planned route due to an inability to make it through a narrow slot in a rock formation. The man and his partner, both from Salt Lake City, had descended into Pandora's Box Canyon the previous day. Pandora's Box is considered to be one of the more difficult canyons to negotiate on the Colorado Plateau because of the extremely narrow slots throughout the canyon. After completing numerous rappels and negotiating several slots, the man, who was quite fit but weighed around 230 pounds, found that he couldn't pass through a particularly tight section.

In an attempt to exit the canyon, the two men scrambled out a lateral canyon, only to find that they couldn't go any further. They decided that the more slender man would continue on and complete the canyon while the larger man stayed behind and awaited assistance. The former completed the slots, descended the 150-foot exit rappel, hiked nine miles to his bike, pedaled four miles to his car, then contacted rangers early on Monday morning. The rangers requested assistance from the Utah State Patrol, which dispatched a helicopter that landed near the stranded man. Members of the county SAR team helped him reach the ship. Neither of the canyoneers was injured. [Submitted by Scott Brown, Chief Ranger]

A group of 5 of us descended Behunin. Conditions in Behunin were as you would expect for this time of year - small pools of water with mysterious sheens, no flow, and a nice temperature inside the canyon.

The hike up was hot. We got a late start - hit the trail around 9AM - because most of us drove down that morning.

I took a lot of pics, but the most interesting shot is the panorama I took on the ledge next to the last Rappel. I posted it on my blog,

http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2010/09/...national-park/

I was pretty careful when I was taking the shots for the panorama, but in hindsight I think I should have been on belay... I don't want to get in the habit of standing unprotected two feet away from 200-foot drops... (I wasn't worried about falling, but... safety first in the future. )

I took a few more panoramas at different points, and when I get time I'll post them on my blog and in this thread.

Trip report part:
We met up with a group of 3 people at the first rappel. They were all new to canyoneering and had just taken a course a day or two again from ZAC on canyoneering. They were doing double-strand on Piranas and backing up their rappels with Prusiks - so every few feet they'd reach down and then slide the rope through their prusiks and then through their piranas.

We had all 5 of our guys down at the top of the second rappel before their second guy was down it.

The group definitely sped up (or our group got slower) - After the first set of drops we didn't see the other group until we got to the 6th rappel right before the last set of rappels. We helped them free their rope out of a groove on the last rap and they asked us for a few tips on adding friction to their pirana.

When I get around to processing them, I'll post more pics here.

I guess I'd like to at least learn how to set up a rope and biners for rappelling. And some of the basics for how to secure the rope, along with some canyoneering basics. Even a one day class would be better than the nothing I currently know--although I've been rappelling before, someone else set it up.

So, I guess what I'm asking is, I usually work on Saturdays, but I have September 18th off and if anyone knows of a class that some place like REI or elsewhere is offering--as long as it's close to Salt Lake--let me know.

(Mod Note: Moved from Hiking; more relevant here)
