So last weekend we took it out and played with it, including filling it up with water and spraying stuff.... well actually it was more like blowing stuff over with the water pressure, but it was major fun.... hit the lights and siren a few times just for giggles....
Anyhoo.... why a grown man decides he needs a fire truck is beyond me. But you got to love a country where anyone can fulfill his dreams....USAUSAUSAUSA.....

Heya Bogley --

Remember last month I was asking about Behind the Rocks? I was gearing up for a hike from Bryce to Moab. I should have just finished this weekend, but... everthing didn't go like I'd hoped. :cry1:

I ended up adandoning the hike on Day 11 after getting an infected blister and a severe strain in my lower leg. It's the first time ever I've had to quit a hike because of an injury -- so it was a major bummer.

BUT -- it was still a good trip and I had a good time exploring some new-to-me places like Stone Donkey Canyon, Rush Beds, Collet Canyon, Red Breaks and Little Death Hollow.

Below is the shorter "recap" video. BUT, if you really want the full story please check out the longer video on YouTube or read the full trip report via my site.

Thanks... and hope to hit Behind the Rocks some day soon!

Hello all,

I will be driving down to Utah the end of the month for some mt. biking and hiking and hopefully some canyoneering. I was planning on rolling into the Moab area late on the 25th (May) and being around until the 2nd of June. My plans flexible, so although I have been looking at the Robbers Roost and San Rafael Swell areas, I can easily drive a little further south if need be.

My experince is mainly in rock/alpine climbing and caving and I really only have some limited experience in non-technical slot canyons, but I will have a selection of static ropes and all of my own equipment and know how to use it, so I am not a newbie in that regard. I will also have my Pathfinder and mountain bike with me (which may open up options for potential trips...)

Anyway, I am up for anything from a non-technical morning stroll to a multi-day epic adventure, so if you have any interest in doing something please drop me a line in the next week and we can start making plans.
Thanks everyone and have fun out there.

Also wondering have any of you done two of them together in the same day? I remember from a while back seeing a map that showed a shortcut escape route that you could take back to the top to complete a second canyon, but can't seem to find it anywhere.

Any help would be great. Thanks

For many years I've been visiting the Meadow Hot Springs located just outside of Meadow Utah. The warm, beautiful, sulfur free springs have always been an enjoyment of mine. I've always wanted to take an underwater camera and really capture some of the beauty of the spring.

Now I'm not a scuba diver (need to work on that) and was trying to find a relatively cheap and reliant system for filming some footage underwater. I'd heard of GoPro, but didn't really know anything about it. Then I went to the Holi Festival of Colors to do some photography and I think every one there had a GoPro. So I started thinking about it, what makes this camera so special. Why does everyone have one.

Next day I'm in Best Buy and I see the GoPro shelf, fully stocked with the new Hero 2. I read the box, looked at the camera, studied the accessories and thought hey this camera might be worth a look at filming in Meadow. So on a whim I purchased two cameras, and headed down to Meadow on a lovely Sunday Morning.

We spent the day filming the spring, not really knowing what to expect. I didn't know anything about filming underwater, or the GoPro. I spent about 3 hours filming different angles, outside the spring, inside the spring. The coolest idea I had was the lower the camera down on a rope to film the bottom. And we had some willing free divers to help take photos from below the surface.

Everything seemed pretty sweet, till I got home. I uploaded the footage onto my laptop and started gazing. And they were all out of focus. What? Did I have an option turned off on the camera? Did I not see the focus dial? What is going on.

After a little research I found out that GoPro Here 2 has a small glitch. It can't film underwater. Ohhh, it's waterproof. But it can't film underwater. Because in the external protective housing there is a small gap between the lens of the camera and the housing lens, and this causing the focal point to change when underwater. Thus, your image is slightly out of focus.

Well dang (I said a lot more than that). What do I do.

Here is the video I took with housing that comes standard with the Hero 2.

So, I started looking around and found a company that makes an after market housing that is Scuba certified to 200' for one hour. So I picked up two of them and headed back down the next weekend.

www.eyeofmine.com

They sells all sorts of accessories and gadgets for the GoPro. Check it out.

So the next trip we actually spent three days at Meadow. I did a lot of filming. And in the process learned a lot about what works and what doesn't. It wasn't until the end of the shoot that I finally figured out something that would help with the footage very much. It was just a last minute idea and it worked great. Can't wait to go back and try it again.

So here is the second video I made, using the after market housing from Eye of Mine.

Looking forward to the next trip. I think this time we will bring some scuba divers. Should be fun.

On Saturday morning I set out early to drive down to The Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. One of my goals for 2012 was to spend more time hiking and exploring in this amazing area. Unfortunately, because of circumstances earlier this year I was unable to make it down here until now, so I’m getting a later start than I had originally planned. Better late than never, I guess. I’ve still got plenty of time this year to return a few more times ;)

When I made it to the park I headed straight for the Squaw Flat Campground and started hiking the Lost Canyon and Squaw Canyon loop trail. It was a beautiful morning that was perfect for hiking. I made it to Lost Canyon in no time.

When I reached the bottom of the canyon, I decided to take a detour to try and find an old cowboy camp. It was a little tricky to find as there wasn't even a faint trail through the brush to reach it, but after a bit of searching I did manage to find it. There was a pretty good bushwhack involved to finally reach it. I even managed to find some faint rock art as I searched the nearby alcoves.
After the detour to the cowboy camp, I continued my hike up Lost Canyon searching for ruins and rock art along the way. I managed to find a few of each.

As I hiked further up canyon, the mosquitoes seemed to get progressively worse. Probably because there was a lot of standing water in the canyon. It was so bad in places that I couldn’t stop for a second or I would be swarmed...so I just kept moving. Shortly before climbing out of Lost Canyon, I ran into another little problem...somehow I had managed to drink all of the water in my CamelBak and I was just a little past the halfway point of the hike with about 4 miles left. I didn't think I drank that much water so far on the hike, but apparently I did? I brought the same amount of water I usually take on a day hike, and I almost always have plenty leftover at the end of the day, even when hiking in 90 degree weather...so I’m not sure what happened this time. I guess I was extra thirsty!
The last 4 miles back to the Jeep were a little tough under the sun with no water, but I managed to make it back. I stopped and rested in the sahde a few times on my way back. After the hike, I left the park to get some dinner and then find somewhere to camp. I originally planned to stop at the Needles Oupost to try one of their burgers since Marty has told me that they make one of the best burgers around, but unfortunately they close the kitchen at 4pm, so I was out of luck. I guess I would be having dinner in camp after all. I'll have to return another time for a burger.

(CNN) -- So, let's say you're doing a Google search for "Kings." Did you mean the L.A. hockey team or the Sacramento basketball team? Maybe the TV show? Or maybe you actually wanted to know something about monarchs.

Google on Wednesday announced Knowledge Graph, a significant change to how search results are delivered that the company believes will make their search engine think more like a human.

"The web pages we [currently] return for the search 'kings,' they're all good," Jack Menzel, director of product management at Google, told CNN in an interview. "You, as a human, associate those words with their real-world meaning but, for a computer, they're just a random string of characters."

With Knowledge Graph, which will begin rolling out to some users immediately, results will be arranged according to categories with which the search term has been associated. So, in the above example, boxes will appear with separate results for the hockey team, basketball team and TV show.

The user can then click on one of those boxes to only get results for the specific topic they were searching.

"It hones your search results right in on the task that you're after," Menzel said.
More specific searches, say for the name of a celebrity, will render boxes with basic information, as well as links to what Google believes are possibly related searches.
Menzel says the initial version of Knowledge Graph has information on 500 million people, places and things and uses 3.5 billion defining attributes and connections to create categories for them.

The feature will begin rolling out as early as Wednesday afternoon for some users in the United States and eventually be available on desktop, mobile and tablet searches. It will first become available in English, then in other languages, Menzel said.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/16/tech/w...html?hpt=hp_t3

It will sneak up fast. What do you have planned on the first big holiday weekend of the summer?

I am headed to Southern Utah to stay with a friend and his family. I plan on throwing a couple (mine and my oldest sons) mountain bikes on the back. We will prolly hit a trail or two and maybe spend the day as a family over at Sand Hollow for some boating/beach stuff. I might also looks for some kid/family friendly hikes in Zion.

You?

I've been planning on doing this canyon for a couple of years. I gathered as much information as possible and lastly--consulted Ram during our Dantes trip.

Tyler went and got the permit and the ranger did not know anything about this canyon or have any insite as to when it was done last. So he issued him the permit.:2thumbs:

I lined up my daughter to shuttle us up to the trailhead, we left canyon junction at 5:30am., Started hiking at 6:30, we arrived at the shuttle at 6:30pm. I was tired, Tyler and Andy took off running:crazy::lol8:

Anyway, this canyon seems to have traits from many Zion canyons and I must say--it is the most photogenic.(imho)

So thanks to 2 pretty great partners, I think was Tylers 5th last hurrah:nod:
Thanks to Scarlet for sharing her husband just days before his new journey begins. The USAF is lucky to have this fine young man.
