what a heavenly place. tons of fun. crystal clear green water, yellow and orange and red sandstone, green trees, blue sky. ahhhhhhhhh... a little early for so much swimming tho so it was a different trip than june would afford. straight down the middle would also require 100' of rope and basic tech gear for a few drops.

Excellent report, who could not dream of such isolation and beauty.
How was the permit process?

yes, a beautiful, beautiful place !

permits were easy. i just mailed in the proper amount for the time spent on the navajo nation and ~2 weeks later i received the permit. the followign is from teh navajo nation -

We do not mail out any permit until they have been paid for. In order to process a hiking and camping permits to Rainbow Bridge for you, we will need the following:

Name, address and phone number of the person applying for permits
Number of people in your group
Description (s) of vehicles that you and/or people in your group will bringing to the trailhead
Departure and return dates
Route of travel from trailhead (s) We recommend that you start hiking from one of the trailheads (North or South trailhead).

Hiking permit is $5.00 per person per trip
Camping permit is $5.00 per person per night (total number of nights that you plan to spend on the trailhead or at trailhead.

Cashiers check or money order payable to: Navajo Nation - for total amount needed for hiking and camping permits. Mail to: Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park, PO Box 4803, Page, AZ 86040.

Once we receive the above requirements, we will be glad to mail out your permits to you.

For additional information, please call our park office at 928-698-2808.

one thing i was worried about before hand was th security. i had heard of vandalized vehicles being common, but not from anyone who had actually been. i got word from a couple people who have actually been and was glad to hear no such stories.

but when we stopped at the kanab ranger station the rangers said there had been a "rash" of vandalizations recently. crap. now we are worried. but once on teh res it is so inconvenient to access the th that i was not worried at all and am glad to say we had no problems and left a copy of the permit in the window clearly visible.

but for the SHITHEADS who have gone, or may go, on navajo lands w/out following their regulations, you not only piss the residents off thru your trespass at the time, but also create ill will towards all visitors, even those who do abide by their rules. if my car had been broken into because of ill will created by some ASSHOLE and their inflated sense of entitlement i would be pissed. and if i knew of someone trespassing i would w/out hesitation let it be known. keeping it quiet creates the potential for backlash on the ground that might be directed towards people who have no blame. i don't want to be the retard who's silence contributed to someones smashed window or flat tire or spray painted vehicle.
