View Full Version : Help What are Good Activities in Utah for someone with a leg injury?

I have friends coming in from Washington in hang out in Utah for a week (next week). I know a few drives I can go on but I'm looking for more opportunities to share Utah's outdoors with them even though they can't do any extensive walking / hiking. Any suggestions?

No hiking required, but if the can get out of the car and look around Nine Mile Canyon might work.

Anywhere in Utah


How much mobility with leg injury?
I am currently planning on having them do the Grotto up Payson Canyon and I'm worried that may be too much for them.

The drive/shuttle through Zion for someone who has not seen it is and always has been incredible.(don't miss the East side, hopefully enroute to Bryce)

Not Utah but almost--the drive out to the Parunaweap overlook is incredible, very little walking required.

While in that neighborhood, the views at Cedar Breaks are incredible, very short walks.

Doing Sunrise/Sunset Points at Bryce is limited walking with very little incline.

After Bryce--a trip around highway 12 would be a great drive.

Sorry for being a bit Southern Utah centric, these likely require a camp/motel if coming from up North.

Hey DiscGo, you probably know this but the grotto up Payson Canyon was torched two years ago with the fires that went through there. I don't know what the scenery looks like other than it was torched.

Obviously there is Bridal Veil falls and next to it a few hundred yards up canyon is Hidden falls that is about as long of a walk from the trailhead as the Grotto and much much easier to get to than Bridal Veil, that is if you want to touch the water. It has some incline to it. There is an upper parking lot that has a new bridge and Hidden falls trailhead is right on the other of the bridge from the parking lot.

Go further up the canyon to Sundance and have a great dinner at the Tree Room (if money isn't an issue) or the other restaurant. To me, Sundance is one of the, if not the most beautiful ski resort on the planet. Plus, you can talk about all the Robert Redford films, some of which were filmed at Sundance like Jeremiah Johnson that was filmed all over up there. The cabin where the bear chased him in and where we was fishing was filmed below Stewart Falls.

Going to southern Utah, if you go to Zion, you must stop at the ghost town of Grafton (on the other side of the Virgin River from Rockville) and see the cemetery and the little city. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed mostly there. If you get to the east side of Zion, shoot 9 holes on the little golf course at Mount Carmel Junction and get your Ho' made pie at the Thunderbird. Anyway, there are few more items to add to the list.

This was my first thought as well. A buddy of mine broke his leg a couple of years ago, and as soon as he got his boot off and could walk without assistance, we did a quick overnight at the Wedge Overlook to see sunset and sunrise, then headed to Nine Mile Canyon and spent another day and a half. There's a lot to see from the road or with very short walks.

Would be a great end to a loop through Southern Utah, just don't stay at the motel in Wellington.

I forgot to reply to your message Scott Card but I went up to the Grotto last year and I was thrilled with how well preserved the Grotto still is. It is absolutely still work doing.
