How long have you been around these parts? How did you hear about Bogley? Curious how everyone got connected.

Yep, it's now been 15 years. It was December of 2004 and my oldest child was just 2 years old. I was sitting in the office (my first job out of college, 2003) and wanted to figure out a way to stay in touch with friends. This was well before Facebook took off or any big social networks. I found a forum software called phpBB. Then with the limited skills I had from my college web design classes, I installed the software on a web server I had and started creating topics. I emailed @Sombeech (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=6) and @rockgremlin ( “http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=5”) to tell them about it.

A few months later @Iceaxe (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=36) joined and brought his posse from a Yahoo Group. From there it continued to spread and the rest is history.

It was of course called uutah.com back in those days...

Well...y'all may notice that my "Join Date" is the same as Acca's: December 2004.

I was one of the first Uutah pioneers.

Btw, don't believe my post count - I had Sombeech jack that number way up to make me look cool. :cool2:

I came in '11 and I was know as Byron. This place was really jumping then. Lots of activity. Then sometime in '14 I pissed somebody off real good around here and got banned, or at least "access denied"...so I just bailed. Didn't even come in to take a look. Didn't even think about it.

Then when Trump got going I thought to come in and see what was going on, 'cuz I figured it would be epic. And it was!

4 years later and damn near half of them are gone!

I showed up in 2008 following sombeech's spam and bold faced recruiting efforts on www.utahmountainbiking.com

By then it was already called bogley, so I missed all that uutah stuff. Was active for a while then disappeared for several years. After a while I got curious what was going on and checked back in. Now I'm hooked again. Thanks a lot.

Congrats on the anniversary. That's a big deal.

I had a young 20-something friend (price1869) tell me the Yahoo Groups sucked and I should move my forums to a more modern platform and lose the boomer forums. I have no clue how Price knew about Uutah but he said you should talk with these guys as they have a great forum but they need members and traffic to populate it, which you could easily provide.

I wanted a forum I could partner with my Climb-utah.com website, but I didn't want to manage the nuts, bolts and headaches of managing the forum. So I went to lunch with Accadacca and we worked out some details and Uutah (now Bogley) really took off as a collective effort, with everyone really working towards the same common goal. Bogley has changed a lot over the 15 years but it's still a fun place to hang out provided you're not a snowflake whose feelings are easily hurt.... LOL...

FWIW - Climb-utah.com turned 21 last month and is now old enough to legally buy beer :-)

Ha ha, yeah I had some spamming techniques that I would frown upon today. I didn't count on becoming friends with a lot of those that I spammed. Fortunately most of them forgave me.

I seem to recall that, I lurk there also when I remember to check in (as iceaxe there since 03'...) but at the time it was too many forums too little time, though the idea of a multiple/various outdoor activity forum appealed. Then one day, on ExpeditionUtah iirc, A friend (IntrepidXJ) posted about going to Bogleyfest and I was thinking along with the rest who responded - A what-fest?

I lurked for a long time. I started with UUtah.com but didn't sign up for quite awhile. Always enjoyed the trip reports and other activities.
Now I laugh at all the memes.
See a few bogleyites in passing but hate to seem like a stalker. :) So I don't introduce myself.

I don't even remember how I heard about uutah. Prolly some of @Somebeech's spamming. :haha: But I'm member #101 and still lurking most of the time, and occasionally posting TRs.

At the time of creation of Bogley.com, obviously. When are you going to update it to include those you’ve had since then? :haha:

I remember back in early 2006 coming across uutah.com after looking for “hiking in St George”. I just moved to St George for college, the outdoor life, and beautiful women (and boy was there ever!). I remember Sombeech, Acca, Gremlins of Rocks, ice, James Wadsworth, Bo Beck, Tanya, and Scott P from the beginning and be heavy regulars.

Like Sombeech said, this was before Facebook but just by a year. Back then it was all MySpace. I signed up and was even highlighted on the homepage as newest members so I instantly had like 500 friends. Lol. And the ones from Utah I would spam to come to uutah because it was fresh, had a lot of great members who helped out everyone and from time to time had some really funny moments.

And a forum is like a living person I have noticed. I have belonged to other forums with other hobbies like woodworking, jeeps, scuba diving, etc. and that’s exactly the case. Most of these forums are now defunct due to one reason or another.

Bogley has had a similar ride in a way - heavy influx of members, then certain members definitely stood out and caused intense “flamewars”. IE CarpeyBiggs (Dan R.), Restrac, Nic (from Backcountrypost) Scott P (who had left and returned a few times), and most recently Slot Machine. I’m sure the veterans remember most of those dramas... [emoji6]

Anyway, it seems to have morphed from a heavy outdoor-related forum to a political-heavy forum flavored by mostly Utah members. And that’s totally fine! And it’s winter so most outdoor stuff goes silent.

It had been amazing to actually reflect on what I have experienced because of a bogley:

-two great Bogleyfests
-actually know the guy who has had multiple Viral drone videos broadcasted on TV along with social media reaching the tens of millions of views, each. It’s even cooler when I’m at work and I hear people talk about the latest viral video from KSL and know that its a member here
-had a guy PM me here for an IT job interview down in Salt Lake. I actually met the guy, interviewed, was offered the position but later declined due to low salary offer
-met Blue_Eyes at Weber State who gave me helpful advice while looking into different career options
-had lunch with Acca and Sombeech discussing the future of Bogley many years ago.
-met up with Justin on a few occasions for some outdoor drone shoots
-met up with some Canadians, a family from Belgium, a few folks from Ireland, a couple from Australia, and a few people from England to “guide” them (for free) through slot canyons across the years. THAT was cool!
-if you canyoneer and know candition.com, well that started here! I created a thread that was continually updated with the current slot canyon “conditions”, and out of the blue, a member PMed and said he had been working on a website that took all what I was doing and made it MUCH more accessible. It has actually turned into a great success for the canyoneering community and I smile when various news scources and social media groups comment on using it [emoji3526]. Kinda cool to see a passion of mine turn into a service that canyoneering community uses regularly. And yes, I’m in contact with the same member even today and he has some great plans to update it to version 2 (which also includes a mobile app for usability!)

And speaking of canyoneering (and hiking) and for those who don’t know, Backcountrypost and Canyon Collective essentially started their roots here. There was a lot of drama between some members which led them to create separate forums which have grown greatly and are a pretty great resource for specific outdoor info. Drama aside, their roots where here :bootyshake:

Good stuff. Great members (the few of us that remain....and or lurk)

And What does the next 15 years look like? [emoji848][emoji848][emoji848]

^^^^ Whew!! I thought this was going to be a lengthy explanation about how you have had fun but have decided to move on.

I'm really glad it's not that. :2thumbs:

Nah, I just just getting sentimental for a bit and rambled on. But it’s all true - Bogley has been a part of some pretty cool things. Even better yet by inspiring people by hosting their own outdoor-related VLOGS and guides, etc. posting about their adventures.

I was about 2 years late to the UUtah.com party. I joined near the end of 2006. I have made some real world friends and some great online friends. People have shared details about some great outdoors locations with me. I've learned to Canyoneer through people on this site and I've had my online skin thickened enough through my membership here to surf the rest of the internet unharmed :haha:. Thanks for the good times, Bogley!

Canyon Collective started its roots in the Canyons Yahoo Group in may 2000. the move to a BBCode based internet forum (Canyon Collective) may have been inspired by uutah/bogley

It’s fun to look back at old posts. I guess Shane’s Yahoo group started right around the same time as the canyons group. Boy did those Yahoo groups become archaic over time.

http://www.bogley.com/forum/showthread.php?20437-Happy-birthday-uutah-com-amp-welcome-climb-utah-com

As far as poaching, everybody did it. We tried to tell everyone we could about Bogley (as Beech mentioned) in other forums and the founders of these new forums that were spun off from Bogley, poached and recruited right from Bogley.

I’m sure everyone has been getting emails from Yahoo announcing the coming demise (today) of the Yahoo Groups platform.
