A large group of amateur canyoneers from Colorado got stuck in Sandthrax over the weekend. Looks like they went unprepared and got in over their heads.

Please Gremlin... get the story straight. They were amateur HIKERS. Obviously only professional hikers should go into Sandthrax...

Suspicions are they were in one of the Leprechauns... after all, 60 year old amateur hikers would not be going into Sandthrax.

I'll bet you a dollar they were camped at Sandthrax and canyoneering Leprechaun, which is causing the confusion.

It takes an extremely talented canyoneer to solo Sandthrax, which is would the guy that went for help would have been required to do.

Before ya'll start lobbing rocks -- I was only reporting what the article said.

From the article:

"Garfield County sheriff's spokeswoman Denise Dastrup said the canyon, which requires rappelling in some spots, is difficult and not for beginners. They were not prepared at all for this kind of a hike. Very amateur in hiking. Probably shouldn't have been in this canyon. Probably should have studied it out a little more," she said."

Just for fun.... here is the news report of the last "we made a wrong turn and got trapped in Sandthrax" rescue story.

Utah man and sons rescued from Sandthrax after 3 day ordeal

You guys need to watch the video with the rescue as it details all the people killed while canyoneering Sandthrax... :roflol:

I'll bet there's twice as many people that get lost/trapped canyoneering as get reported in the news. It's just that they manage to escape on their own or the media never hears about it.

I would bet it was something other than the Thrax as well...and if it was, then perhaps someone needs to put a sign up at the start to warn the knuckleheads they're in the wrong spot...a sign similar to the one at the Black Hole.

Garfield county SAR has confirmed they were in Sandthrax. Incredible.

Thanks :2thumbs:

I assume that means someone really had to stud up and solo the entire route to call for SAR.... I'm impressed. Soloing the route is impressive, but doing it under the pressure of "your it or they might die" is more impressive.

I guess they could have reversed the route and climbed out the top.... but that is also pretty impressive.

If they manage to escape on their own... then they are not trapped.

Kinda like "keeper" potholes. If you got out, it ain't a keeper!

So--are you saying that you misrepresent them as such in your trip reports and beta?:ne_nau:

or just perhaps a very common sticky wicket.

 It is possible to be trapped temporarily -- the term "trapped" does not imply a permanent situation.

So using your definition, "Keeper" potholes are only defined as "Keeper" only if they keep you forever. If you get stuck in a Keeper and then get out, then it's not a Keeper pothole. Technically, there are no Keeper potholes because nobody gets trapped in one permanently.

somehow, the term--facetious comes into play, here.

sometimes the scholarly, forget to be smart.

Arguing over what constitutes a keeper pothole is a lot like arguing over who is the smartest kid in the dumb reading group.... just sayin...

What about the lady who died in Knotted Rope? Granted she broke her arm and was unable to use it, and the husband was unable to pull her it - she did technically, pass away in that pothole.

True I guess. [emoji854]The body needs to be there for a ‘true’ keeper

This is all starting to make sense. A long time ago I was told my wife was a keeper. Many years later she's became my ex-wife. I proved them all wrong. :roflol:

I just chatted with a reporter from Denver Fox News - the group intended to be in Leprechaun. The SAR team got out there and did not find them in Leprechaun... "uh oh", went and got them in SandThrax. Crazy stuff. How about some person soloing out of SandThrax to go get help!!!!

KDVR/KWGN Denver will have a story on that with SAR video tonight (Wed) or tomorrow (Thurs May 2).

Wow!

Let me stick my foot in my mouth again:

When asked if he had ever been lost, Daniel Boone replied: "Nope, never been lost. Now I was a might confused for three days once..."

Now they gotta put a sign up there. Those folks are lucky they had someone good.

“If a 65-year old woman got stuck in the slot canyon, then surely me, a young whippersnapper could do it no problem...”

If I was in Denver and loved the outdoors (and didn’t know much about canyoneering) and saw these images/videos, it would of opened my world to this area and I would be on the next plane out there...

...only to get stuck, of course.

Byron has foresight, I’ll be willing to bet in the next 5-10 years we will see a signpost at the entrance of each of the Irish canyons.
