Apparently, the cats are jumping the ship as many players have applied to transfer away from BYU. Aside from that, the first Spring training saw 10 quarterbacks sign up. :lol8:

Independence has not been good for BYU in creating relevance or advancing the goal of P5 inclusion. Haven't beaten your rival or finished even one season in the AP top 25 as an independent. And that's just scratching the surface.
How many wins?

at Tennessee
vs USC
vs Washington

at USF
vs Boise State

BYU will squeak into a minor bowl somewhere as their backend is loaded with glorified high school teams.
Yo BYU, you're not Notre Dame... get on your hands and knees and beg the MWC to take you back so you can become relevant again.

5-7 was my first thought, but BYU will win one they shouldn't and once again send hopes and dream soaring in Cougar Town and talks of a major bowl and national ranking.
My question is which of the big boy's will BYU manage to knock off? Right now I'm thinking USC is a possibility. They get USC at altitude and at home, not to mention USC is currently just a mid tier PAC 12 team.

I don't know what Pat Kinahan is smoking, but BYU going to the ACC is a flat out terrible idea. It's the ACC - Atlantic Coast Conference. The travel to get out there would be taxing on BYU players, and none of the ACC teams would want to make that trip out west.
Also counting against BYU is the fact that BYU won't play on Sunday plus BYU's LGBDQ policies aren't in line with those in place outside Provo.
Bad idea. BYU needs to just eat some humble pie and go back to the MWC.

Well, you may want to re-read the article. :cool2: It is actually the AAC or the AMERICAN ATHLETIC Conference and most games would be played one time zone away. Also, it would be for football only. I actually think this is equal to or maybe even better than the MWC. Interesting concept to mull over. Follow the money on this decision. Independence still makes more financial sense than the MWC.

Ya because you know BYU is.
I think this game carries a decent probability for an upset. At this point Utes players have heard all the hype and might be lulled into a false sense of superiority, thinking that all they have to do is walk onto the field and they'll win.
Meanwhile it's all hands on deck in Cougartown, with everybody working, thinking, and praying for that upset.
Hopefully the Utes don't succumb to their own hubris.

If any of y'all are in Cougartown on game day at noon, stop by my office parking lot for a burger and/or a hot dog on me. Yes, it is a pregame tailgate party of sorts for clients, and yes, we are cougar fans, but hey, I'll still feed the Utes. My law firm is Fillmore Spencer, 3301 N. University Ave., Provo. It is about a mile north of Lavell Edwards Stadium. I will be one of the guys at the grill. Seriously, we will even feed people on Bogley. :haha:

BYU began preparing for Utah on January 1st, if they can get a win over Utah I expect they will start the year 2-2 and save Kalani's job for another year. This year the game means everything for the Cougars. Utah had better bring their A-game.

Our little pre-game tailgate tradition is at noon to about 1:30. We've been doing this for several years. Usually, the first game is on a Saturday so we would do this on the Friday before the game during the work day for clients and friends. But this year, it is on game day. Yep, we are about 6 hours earlier than most tailgaters would start, but hey, a tradition is a tradition. Also, about 80% of us will be going to the game that evening, otherwise, I'd say stick around and watch it on the big screen in the office.

The Cougars will be 3.5 point underdogs this weekend at Tennessee.
Personally, I think the Cougs get a road win here.
Both teams are hungry for a win right now because last week the Vols lost at home to Georgia State - an atrocious team that Tennessee was favored to clobber by 24 points. But even though the Vols will be looking for a redemption victory, BYU is a much tougher team than Georgia State. Hell, the Cougars managed to somehow hold Utah to only 3 points of offense going into halftime. BYU is a tough team, and a lot of teams are going to underestimate them this season. I think it's going to be the Wilson/Williams/Bushman show and the Vols won't be able to stop it. Look for Wilson to get close to 100 yards rushing, and Williams will join him with at least 100 more.

So, did that Tennesee win save Kilani's job, at least for a few more games?
Nah, his job was already safe at least through this year. I don't see them firing a head coach mid season without some scandal being the main cause. I still think he's a good coach and byu would be dumb to fire him after this year.
The problem with byu is with their fanbase. They perennially think way too highly of their team, and for some reason demand 11 win seasons. Bronco was a bit stodgy but is a great coach and they basically demanded his firing for his last 3 years in Provo. Now he has the doormat that is Virginia going to bowls and being ranked, and byu fans are demanding their new coach's head.
Only people dumber are the few Utah fans out there that demand Whit's head after every loss.

Pretty funny article about this week's matchup between BYU and USC:
https://reignoftroy.com/2019/09/11/book-of-trojan-satirical-usc-vs-byu-game-preview/2/
Some funny quotes from the article:
The Positives For USC
BYU beat Tennessee last week, so they already got their upset out of the way.
It took two overtimes for BYU to beat the most embarrassing football program outside of UCLA.
The game is at 12:30 p.m., so no chance for any #Pac12AfterDark wackiness.
QB Zach Wilson threw two pick sixes against Utah, so hopefully the turnover skewer makes it through baggage claim.
No one expected this from Slovis, so he’s basically playing with house money for the rest of the season.
The Negatives For USC
USC is ranked, so an upset usually follows right after that.
USC won last week, so their letdown game is still on the schedule.
The only way Clay Helton could prevent his team from looking ahead to Utah would be to give them the mind of a goldfish. Not sure how Magikarp would look lining up under center.
After the win against Tennessee, the Cougars may have a taste for once-prestigious, now-underwhelming Power 5 conference teams.
If Coke doesn’t have enough caffeine for Graham Harrell, the Trojans offense may fall asleep in the second half.
BYU are not the Mormons you may have seen portrayed in the broadway play. They throw shoes, injure players, and if all else fails, will just try to fight you. Not quite the guys in short-sleeve button downs and clip-on ties you ignore when they knock on your door. Hopefully USC can avoid the Cougars dirty antics and the starting quarterback finishes the game with two ACLs in tact. The Trojans are one for two so far this season.
Clay Helton doesn’t do well outside the Coliseum and USC doesn’t do well in Utah. Luckily, this game isn’t in Salt Lake City, so the results may be different this time around.

In all seriousness... with the whole independence fiasco, temple recommend requirement, and other measures the church uses to tie the hands of the coach I think they would have a hard time finding a better coach to replace Sitake. Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde broke down two coaching hires of local interest in a recent article, characterizing Virginia’s hiring of Bronco Mendenhall as a “questionable hire gone right” while BYU's Kalani Sitake was given the grade of “unimaginative hire gone wrong.”
QUESTIONABLE HIRES GONE RIGHT
Bronco Mendenhall (23), Virginia. Record at Virginia: 20-23. ACC record: 10-16.
In the commonwealth of Virginia, Fuente and Mendenhall have performed the gridiron version of the fable of the tortoise and the hare. Fuente sprinted to a fast start but has lost his way, while Mendenhall has resolutely made progress. He seemed like a strange fit after coming from BYU and spending his entire coaching career in the West, but the Cavaliers keep getting better on his watch.
Toss out his 2-10 debut season, rebuilding in the wake of the Mike London Era, and the record looks much better. He’s 18-12 since then, 4-1 this year, and this team might well earn the Cavaliers their first ACC Coastal Division title. Along the way, Mendenhall would be well-advised to beat Virginia Tech for the first time since he came to Charlottesville.
UNIMAGINATIVE HIRES GONE WRONG
Kalani Sitake (30), BYU. Record at BYU: 22-22.
He was a BYU player and a Mormon to boot, so what could go wrong? Well, a few things. Life as an independent isn’t easy, but it probably shouldn’t be as hard as Sitake has made it look the past two-plus seasons. He’s hit some high points — a stunning win at Wisconsin last year, plus victories over USC, Tennessee and Arizona. But there have been losses to East Carolina, UMass, Northern Illinois, and now Toledo last Saturday. BYU’s two wins this season have both come in overtime, and the victory at Tennessee was a certified miracle. The Cougars aren’t too far from being 0-5 at this point.

It's a big win in that is should get BYU into a bowl game which is huge. And the reason it's huge is it gets you two extra weeks of practice that teams use mostly to work with next years team and get a big jump on spring practice.
It also helps in that people will stop referring to you as the shittiest team in Utah.... LMAO...

Romney.
Looks like it’s Wilson today. Does it matter? Idaho State (3-7)...and UMass (1-9).

Interesting game with absolutely no defense. I couldn’t believe how effortlessly the offenses walked up and down the field. Some questionable play calling and officiating if you ask cougar fans. That dump off pass on 3rd and 2 had me scratching my head. Zach Wilson didn’t gain many fans either.
BYU fans are in mourning today, but some still think it was a successful season at 7-6, back to back years.

Very disappointing game. So many things to fix in the off season. But on the bright side, my smoked lobster mac and cheese and smoked turkey I prepared during the game for Christmas day turned out great!
